范曾，1938年生于江苏南通，中国书画大师、著名国学家、诗人。现为北京大学教授、北京大学中国画法研究院院长，英国格拉斯哥大学名誉文学博士，中国艺术研究院博士生导师、终身研究员，南开大学终身教授、南开大学文学院、历史学院博士生导师，南通大学终身教授。2008年获法兰西国民之星金质勋章。2009年被联合国教科文组织任命为“多元文化特别顾问”。2010年9月，法国总统萨科齐向范曾先生授予“法国荣誉军团骑士勋章”。

Fan Zeng, born in Nantong, Jiangsu in 1938, is a Chinese calligraphy and painting master, renowned sinologist, and poet. I am currently a professor at Peking University, the dean of the Chinese Painting Research Institute at Peking University, an honorary doctorate in literature from the University of Glasgow, a doctoral supervisor and lifelong researcher at the Chinese Academy of Art, a lifelong professor at Nankai University, a doctoral supervisor at the School of Literature and History at Nankai University, and a lifelong professor at Nantong University. Received the Gold Medal of the National Star of France in 2008. In 2009, he was appointed as a "Special Advisor on Multiculturalism" by UNESCO. In September 2010, French President Sarkozy awarded Mr. Fan Zeng the Knight of the Legion of Honour of France.

Laozi Leaving the Pass "is one of Fan Zeng's most representative creative themes. 范曾评说自己笔下的老子：“我喜欢画老子，画他的说法演教，画他的闭目神思，画他的骑牛出关，而旁边总有一个稚拙无邪的村童做他的书仆，背着他的几卷《道德经》和饮水的葫芦。老子则素衣布鞋，须眉皓如积雪，而头发披散，不着巾帻，有飘飘欲仙，不与世争的风神。他微微地欠着腰，半睁半闭着那双洞察天地古今的慧目，寂然凝虑、悄焉动容。那童子不正是对老子永怀敬意的范曾我吗？在老子面前，我心灵上有一种无法言状的感动。我笔下那霜雪似的皓髯，正昭示着皑皑千山般明净高远的学识；那止水般的宁静，也象征着老子澄潭千尺、清澈幽深的思维。

《老子出关图》是范曾最擅长的绘画题材，画中的老子，白发飘然，襟带倏然，稳如山岳，又似乎全无重量，身形飘渺，又宛若就在眼前。此般风骨，何等清新宕逸、遒举俊发；范曾笔下的老子，形象透着一股仙风道骨之气，老子衣纹以有力的线条勾勒而成，洒脱的大气。带路的小童脸上洋溢着笑容，衣纹的处理颇具动感。范曾自作篆书题字，结字严谨宽博，用笔苍劲有力，为各幅作品都平添了古朴气息。

Fan Zeng commented on his own portrayal of Laozi: "I enjoy painting Laozi, depicting his teachings and teachings, his closed eyes and divine thoughts, and his ox riding out of the gate, while there is always a naive and innocent village boy next to him as his bookkeeper, carrying several volumes of the Tao Te Ching and a gourd to drink water. Laozi, on the other hand, wears plain clothes and cloth shoes, with eyebrows as white as snow, and his hair is disheveled, without a veil, with a wind god that floats like an immortal and does not compete with the world. He slightly tilts his waist, half open and half closed his wise eyes that insight into the past and present of heaven and earth, silently contemplating and moving. That boy is not just showing eternal respect to Laozi. Have you ever been a fan of me? In front of me, there is an indescribable emotion in my heart. The frosty beard in my pen symbolizes the clear and lofty knowledge of a thousand mountains; The tranquil water like stillness also symbolizes Laozi's clear and profound thinking of a thousand feet in the clear pond.

The painting "Laozi Leaving the Pass" is Fan Zeng's most skilled subject matter.
