Nickel coins refer to coins made of nickel.

The rare treasure and model of nickel coins, known as the pioneer of Chinese nickel coins, is "Birmingham". During the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, in order to save the dying Qing Dynasty, Prince Gong Yi Xin, the governor of Zhili, Beiyang Minister Li Hongzhang, the governor of Liangxiang, Zeng Guofan, the governor of Liangjiang, Zhang Zhidong and others launched the famous "Westernization Movement" in China's modern history. While establishing the military industry, they put forward the idea of reforming the silver standard of the currency of the Qing Empire. This idea was appreciated by Emperor Guangxu, who was at a loss for silver compensation for foreign powers. With his tacit approval, Li Hongzhang not only planned and formulated a currency reform plan, but also conducted overseas investigations and commissioned the renowned British Birmingham Mint to mint several model nickel coins for the Qing government.

On February 8, 1914, the Nationalist government announced the issuance of a 5-cent nickel coin. In the 24th year of the Republic of China, three types were released: 5 points, 10 points, and 20 points.

In November 1935, the Nationalist government announced the implementation of a fiat currency policy, prohibiting the circulation of silver dollars in the market. Subsequently, 21 versions of nickel coins that can be circulated in the market will be issued; But in fact, as early as the beginning of 1935, the government of the Republic of China had already appointed the Philadelphia Mint in the United States to mint 11 pieces of nickel coins of five cents, ten cents, and twenty cents each, and submit samples to the Nationalist government. During the period of the Nationalist government, there were many exchanges with the United States regarding coinage matters, such as the establishment of the Central Mint and the management after construction, which were all thanks to the United States. The 'Ship Ocean' molds were supplied entirely by the Philadelphia Mint from beginning to end. The trial production of nickel coins was also carried out by the factory in the 24th year of the Republic of China, and from the 25th year of the Republic of China, it was produced by the Shanghai Central Mint.

At the end of 1935, the Shanghai Central Mint officially minted nickel coins.

In the 24th year of the Republic of China, the Philadelphia Mint in the United States attempted to mint eleven coins. In the 25th year of the Republic of China, the Shanghai Central Mint produced a large number of coins. In the 26th year of the Republic of China, only sample coins were seen, and there were no circulating coins. In the 27th year of the Republic of China, mass production resumed. In the 28th year of the Republic of China, it was transferred to Chongqing Mint for continued minting, lasting only one year.

Who would have thought that these few ordinary nickel coin samples, which were originally not worth much, would suddenly increase in value after nearly a century. Coin collecting associations and collectors from around the world, upon learning of the discovery of a rare and out of print nickel coin sample in China, eagerly searched for its whereabouts. This nickel coin prototype was referred to by British numismatic expert Ward Wood as the "ancestor of nickel coins in Chinese currency", and his rubbings were included in his monograph "A Study of the History of Chinese Coins". In 1987, during her friendly visit to China, Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom repeatedly requested to see the charm of Birmingham from relevant Chinese authorities. But due to various reasons, the queen only saw the rubbings of this nickel coin and had no chance to witness this rare object firsthand.
