20世纪七八十年代，中华大地酝酿着变革的激流。深圳经济特区的成立，奏起改革开放的号角，春天来了，中华民族的春天来了。伴随改革开放，各项事业正方兴未艾，第四套人民币应运而生。为体现各族人民同心同德，奋发图强的时代风貌，第四套人民币在设计思想、艺术风格和印刷工艺上较之前三套均有明显突破和创新。第四套人民币从1978年4月27日开始发行，至1997年4月1日止，共发行9种面额，14种票券。其中1角券1种，2角券1种，5角券1种，1元券3种(1980、1990、1996)，2元券2种(1980、1990)、5元券1种;10元券)种,50元券2种(1980、1990)，100元券2种(1980、1990)。第四套人民币各种面额正面图案均为人物头像、线条细腻、形象逼真;背面估计名胜图景，或气势，或绮丽秀美。其印刷工艺和防伪设计已趋近国际先进水平。伍拾元和壹佰元券均采用安全线，无色荧光和磁性墨迹。在采用特种技术的同时，传统的水印和凹印技术也得到了充分的发挥。

第四套人民币的发行和流通，不仅见证了中国的改革开放，更是标志着中国历史性巨变的一座丰碑，他的作用将永载中国货币流通史册。随着我国第五套人民币的问世，第四套人民币将逐步退出流通领域，从而成为收藏的珍品。

第四套人民币的纸张光洁度和坚挺度很好，耐折，耐磨，耐腐蚀。该套人民币分别形成固定水印、半固定水印、不固定水印三种图案，工艺要求极高。如100元券的毛泽东侧面浮雕水印像和50元、10元券的工人、农民防伪水印技术，已达到世界领先水平。第四套人民币的油墨技术、纸浆中掺入的纤维和彩点等技术指标在当时都是极为先进的。而且在1990年版的第四套人民币50元和100元券中，还有一道贯通上下的黑色金属安全线，供人们透视辨别真伪。

逐渐退出流通，升值信号强烈

1999年第五套人民币发行后，第四、五套人民币混合流通。虽然无法确定第四套人民币何时退出流通领域，但市场走势却传递出了第四套人民币升值的强烈信号。因为第四套人民币有两种票额“只收不付”，整套的第四套人民币已经很少见了。因此，虽然全球金融危机的余威还未过去，第四套人民币收藏却异常火爆，第四套人民币大全套、连体钞的价格也在稳步攀升，升值态势喜人。
