百宝嵌插屏

“百宝嵌”技艺，亦被称为“周制”，源自明代嘉靖时期。当时，漆器工匠周祦匠心独运，运用珍珠、珊瑚、玉石、水晶及玛瑙等珍稀材料的独特质感和绚丽色彩，巧妙地镶嵌出山水人物、花卉翎毛等精美装饰图案，从而创立了百宝嵌技法。值得一提的是，这一技艺在历史文献中的最早记载，出现在明隆庆年间（1567-1572）由髹漆名匠黄成所著的漆工专著《髹饰录》中。

The technique of "Baibao inlay", also known as "Zhou system", originated in the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. At that time, the lacquerware craftsman Zhou Li was ingenious enough to use the unique texture and brilliant colors of rare materials such as pearls, corals, jade, crystals, and agates to skillfully inlay exquisite decorative patterns such as landscapes and figures, and flowers and plumes, thus creating the Baibao inlay technique. It is worth mentioning that the earliest record of this technique in historical documents appeared in "Painting Record", a monograph on lacquer craftsmen written by Huang Cheng, a famous lacquer painter, during the Longqing period (1567-1572) of the Ming Dynasty.

The technique of Bai Bao inlay, which brings together the endless ingenuity and years of effort of craftsmen, was known as a luxury product in ancient times, and was not accessible to the ordinary people. However, with the arrival of the Qing Dynasty, this technique gradually developed into an important inlay technology. When Baibao is carefully inlaid on precious mahogany, such as zitan, the good texture of these high-quality wood itself and the simple but elegant texture make the carved decorative patterns more delicate and smooth, thus producing a breathtaking artistic effect.

百宝嵌展现出两种主要的表现形式：凸嵌与平嵌。在凸嵌技艺中，镶嵌物巧妙地凸起于地子表面之上，宛如浮雕般生动，赋予作品强烈的立体感和逼真度。这种手法通常应用于素漆或硬木上，通过精心雕刻的凹槽来固定和突显镶嵌物，使其在整体上更显独特与精致。平嵌，即镶嵌物与地子表面保持齐平。在制作时，首先构建好骨架，并涂上生漆进行压实和晾干。随后，再次涂抹生漆，并在漆未干之前，将镶嵌物依照纹饰粘贴到位。之后，继续上漆并打磨，重复此过程两到三遍，直至漆层高于嵌件。最终，通过精细打磨，将嵌件表面完全展现出来，并涂抹一层光漆，至此，百宝嵌制作完成。

Baibao inlay shows two main forms of expression: convex inlay and flat inlay. In the convex inlay technique, the inlay is skillfully raised above the surface of the ground like a relief sculpture, giving the work a strong sense of three-dimensionality and realism. Usually applied to lacquer or hardwood, this technique uses carefully carved grooves to hold and emphasize the inlay, making it more unique and delicate as a whole. Flat inlay, i.e., the inlay remains flush with the surface of the ground. The skeleton is first constructed and coated with lacquer, compacted and dried. Afterwards, the lacquer is applied again and before it dries, the inlay is glued into place according to the pattern. Afterwards, the lacquer is applied and polished, repeating the process two or three times until the lacquer is higher than the inlay. Finally, the surface of the inlay is fully revealed through fine sanding and a coat of glossy lacquer is applied, thus completing the production of the Baobao inlay.
