At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, social contradictions became increasingly acute, and the economic order was in chaos. Especially in the monetary system, the drawbacks of the circulation of Wuzhu coins gradually became apparent. After Wang Mang usurped the Han Dynasty and established the Xin Dynasty, he attempted to solve financial crises and stabilize the economy through frequent currency reforms. In the second year of Jushe (7 AD), apart from Wuzhu coins, Wang Mang newly minted three types of currencies: "Yidao Pingwuqian," "Qidao Wubai," and "Daquan Wushi," which circulated alongside Wuzhu coins. Qidao Wubai came into being against this historical backdrop. It carried the political intention of Wang Mang's regime to reform the monetary system and to some extent reflected the complex social and economic conditions of the time.

In terms of shape, Qidao Wubai imitated the knife-shaped coins of the Pre-Qin period but also incorporated innovative elements. It was overall knife-shaped, consisting of a knife ring and a knife body. The knife ring was circular with a square hole in the middle. This element of square-hole round coins was borrowed from the Qin Banliang and Han Wuzhu coins, reflecting the integration of different currency shapes. The knife body was rectangular, connected to the knife ring, with simple and smooth lines, giving it a primitive and solemn aesthetic.

The surface inscription of Qidao Wubai was "Qidao Wubai" in seal script, which was beautiful in calligraphy and vigorous in strokes. The two characters "Qidao" were on the knife body, and the two characters "Wubai" were on the knife ring, with a reasonable layout, reflecting the superb design level and calligraphic art of ancient craftsmen. Seal script was the official universal font at that time, used in currency casting, which not only highlighted the solemnity of the currency but also facilitated identification and circulation.

On the knife ring part, in addition to characters, decorative patterns such as star patterns and moon patterns sometimes appeared. These patterns may have certain symbolic meanings. For example, star patterns might be related to the worship of celestial phenomena, and moon patterns might be associated with the concept of yin and yang. They not only increased the beauty of Qidao Wubai but also added mysterious cultural colors to it.

Qidao Wubai was mainly cast from bronze. Bronze is an alloy of copper, tin, lead, and other metals, which has the advantages of high hardness, good wear resistance, and resistance to corrosion, making it very suitable for casting coins. The bronze smelting technology in the Xin Dynasty was already relatively mature, which could ensure the relatively stable material quality of Qidao Wubai and make it not easy to be damaged in circulation.

At that time, the Fanzhu method (mold-casting technique) was mainly used to cast Qidao Wubai. The Fanzhu method can be further divided into the陶范法 (pottery mold method) and the铜范法 (copper mold method). For the pottery mold method, craftsmen first created a ceramic mold, carved the shape and inscriptions of Qidao Wubai on it, poured molten bronze into the mold, and after cooling and solidification, broke the mold to remove the finished product, which was then polished and refined. The copper mold method used copper to make the mold; compared to pottery molds, copper molds were more durable, could be reused multiple times, improved casting efficiency, and produced coins with more uniform and regular quality. In actual casting, different Fanzhu methods might be chosen according to production conditions and needs.

As one of the legal currencies of the Xin Dynasty, Qidao Wubai achieved circulation within a certain range in its early issuance period, primarily relying on the coercive promotion of the Xin regime. It mainly circulated in the core ruling areas of the Xin Dynasty, such as the Central Plains region and important cities like Chang'an and Luoyang. However, due to the frequent currency reforms by Wang Mang's regime, the variety of currencies and complex conversion rules made it difficult for ordinary people to adapt. Meanwhile, social turmoil and frequent wars in the late Xin Dynasty severely disrupted the economic order, greatly hindering the circulation of Qidao Wubai. Additionally, the significant gap between its actual value and face value triggered private casting and counterfeiting, further destabilizing the currency market, ultimately leading to its short circulation period.

In terms of denomination, Qidao Wubai was stipulated to be equivalent to 500 Wuzhu coins. However, in actual market circulation, there was a discrepancy between "currency value and real worth" due to the mismatch between its weight/material value and face value. In terms of material and weight, the value corresponding to Qidao Wubai's bronze content was far lower than the value of 500 Wuzhu coins, leading to low public recognition of its value in transactions and planting hidden dangers for its eventual withdrawal from circulation.

As a physical witness to the currency system reforms of the Xin Dynasty, Qidao Wubai carries rich historical and cultural information. It reflects the political, economic, cultural, and social conditions from the late Western Han to the Xin Dynasty, serving as important physical materials for studying this specific historical period. Through its study, we can gain insights into the evolution of the monetary system, casting craftsmanship, and social economic operation模式 (models) of the time, holding irreplaceable historical and cultural value.

Artistically, Qidao Wubai features a unique design that integrates elements of knife-shaped coins and square-hole round coins, possessing strong formal aesthetic appeal. Its seal script inscriptions showcase exquisite calligraphy, with graceful and smooth strokes and ingenious layout, reflecting the superb skills of ancient craftsmen and calligraphers. Meanwhile, the decorative patterns on the knife ring add artistic charm. In terms of both overall shape and detailed design, Qidao Wubai has high artistic and aesthetic value, beloved by ancient coin collectors and art researchers.

In the collection market, Qidao Wubai holds high value due to its relatively scarce existence, high historical and cultural significance, and unique artistic charm. Prices vary depending on factors like condition and variety. Generally, well-preserved specimens with clear inscriptions and patterns command higher market prices. With the development of the ancient coin collection market and growing awareness of historical and cultural heritage protection, its market value has been gradually rising, making it a popular variety in the field of ancient coin collecting.

The design of Qidao Wubai, which combines the knife-shaped coin and square-hole round coin formats, provided inspiration for the development of later currency forms. Although this unique knife-shaped currency was not widely continued after the Xin Dynasty, its innovative concept of currency形制 (form) influenced the design ideas of some special currencies or commemorative coins in later periods, becoming a unique example in the evolution of ancient Chinese currency forms.

As a cultural carrier, Qidao Wubai embodies seal script culture, casting craftsmanship culture, etc., which have been inherited and developed through history. Seal script has always held an important position in later calligraphy art, and the seal script on Qidao Wubai provides precious physical samples for the study and inheritance of seal calligraphy. Meanwhile, its casting techniques offer important clues for researching ancient metal casting technologies, promoting the inheritance and development of related cultural fields.

As a unique wonder in ancient Chinese currency culture, Qidao Wubai has left a deep mark in history with its unique shape, complex historical background, exquisite casting craftsmanship, and rich cultural connotations. It is not only an important part of the Xin Dynasty's monetary system but also a bright pearl in the treasure trove of ancient Chinese currency culture, worthy of in-depth study and cherishing.
