Impact glass, as a special substance from outer space, has long attracted the attention of scientists, collectors, and even the general public due to its unique origin, extraordinary physical and chemical properties, and mysterious extraterrestrial source. It is a natural glass formed when surface materials rapidly melt, splash, and cool under high temperature and pressure during asteroid or comet impacts on Earth,宛如 (just like) a "meteorite code" written by the universe on Earth, waiting to be deciphered. Impact glass is generally transparent to translucent, though some become opaque due to high impurity content. Its refractive index typically ranges from 1.48 to 1.62, with variations caused by different chemical compositions and formation conditions. Under a polarizing microscope, impact glass appears as a homogeneous body without the birefringence of crystals, an important optical feature of its amorphous structure. Impact glass exhibits a rich color palette. Besides common black and dark green, it can also be brown, yellow, gray, etc. Colors are mainly determined by chemical compositions. For example, higher iron content may result in dark brown; elements like nickel and cobalt, or valence state changes of trace elements, can cause color differences. The main chemical component of impact glass is silicon dioxide (SiO₂), usually accounting for 60% to 80%, similar to silicate rocks in the Earth's crust, but with distinct differences in trace elements and isotope composition. In addition to SiO₂, it contains oxides such as aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), iron oxide (FeO, Fe₂O₃), calcium oxide (CaO), magnesium oxide (MgO), sodium oxide (Na₂O), and potassium oxide (K₂O). However, the proportion of each component differs from terrestrial rocks. For instance, impact glass often has relatively low CaO content, and the content of certain trace elements (such as platinum group elements like iridium and rhodium) differs from the background values of terrestrial rocks, serving as an important marker to distinguish impact glass from artificial glass and volcanic glass on Earth.

The density of impact glass generally ranges from 2.3 to 3.0 g/cm³, with specific values depending on its chemical composition and internal structure. Compared to common terrestrial silicate rocks (e.g., granite with a density of about 2.6–2.7 g/cm³), impact glass shows density fluctuations due to material melting and recombination during formation. For example, impact glass rich in heavy elements like iron and nickel may approach a density of 3.0 g/cm³, while those with relatively simple compositions and more bubbles have lower densities.
Its Mohs hardness typically ranges from 5 to 6, slightly lower than quartz (Mohs hardness 7). This makes impact glass prone to surface scratches when rubbed against hard objects, though its hardness is slightly higher than or comparable to ordinary glass (e.g., window glass with a Mohs hardness of about 5.5). However, the toughness of impact glass differs from ordinary glass: due to its internal structure (amorphous with possible micro-cracks), it fractures differently. Some impact glass is more brittle, while others may exhibit certain toughness in specific directions.
Impact glass is rich in cosmogenic trace elements and those with special isotope ratios. For instance, iridium (Ir) has an extremely low content in the Earth's crust (about 1×10⁻⁹ mass fraction), but in impact glass—derived from cosmic impact events—its Ir content is significantly higher than in terrestrial rocks (though still far lower than in some stony meteorites). In terms of isotopes, the oxygen isotopes (¹⁶O, ¹⁷O, ¹⁸O) in impact glass differ from terrestrial materials, with their ratios falling within specific ranges, reflecting their formation in a cosmic environment with material sources distinct from terrestrial magmas. Through precise analysis of these trace elements and isotopes, scientists can trace the origin and source region of impact glass, and even explore the evolutionary history of cosmic matter.
In China, impact glass has been discovered mainly in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, and other regions. Most of these belong to the Australasian tektite strewn field, "products" of ancient impact events in Southeast Asia. Through geological processes and material transport, they are distributed in southern coastal and some inland areas of China.
Impact glass serves as a "natural recorder" for studying Earth's history of cosmic impacts. By dating different tektite groups (commonly using argon-argon dating, uranium-lead dating, etc.), the geological epochs of corresponding impact events can be determined, thereby constructing a timeline of cosmic impact events in Earth's history. For example, dating the Australasian tektites has linked them to an impact event about 780,000 years ago, helping scientists understand the frequency and scale of large impacts in geological history, as well as their effects on Earth's ecological environment and geological evolution.
Additionally, analyzing the distribution and sedimentary characteristics of impact glass can infer the approximate location and scale of the impact event. Extensively distributed tektite fields often correspond to large impact events, where the impactor may have a diameter of several kilometers or more. The energy released by such impacts is sufficient to profoundly affect the global climate and ecosystem—triggering environmental effects like earthquakes, tsunamis, and "impact winter" (similar to nuclear winter, where dust blocks solar radiation, causing a sharp global temperature drop). The study of impact glass provides key clues for reconstructing these ancient catastrophic events.
Due to their unique extraterrestrial origin and scarcity, impact glasses have high collection value. For meteorite collectors, their morphology, fusion crust, and internal features (such as bubbles and crystallites) are all attractive. Complete specimens with奇特 (unique) shapes (e.g., perfect teardrop or rare button-like forms) and well-preserved fusion crusts are particularly valuable.
From a scientific collection perspective, impact glass samples from different distribution areas and types are crucial for studying their genesis and distribution patterns, making them highly regarded by professional institutions and collectors. Meanwhile, the rarity of impact glass determines its unique status in the collection market. The number of impact glasses discovered globally each year is limited, and with exploration and collection, high-quality specimens are gradually decreasing, further enhancing their collection value.
