Liu Wenxi was born in 1933 in Shengzhou, Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. He was obsessed with painting from an early age. In his early years, he received art enlightenment at Shanghai Yucai School and was later admitted to Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art). Under the guidance of famous masters such as Pan Tianshou, he laid a solid foundation in traditional painting.
In 1958, he went to Xi'an and rooted himself in the Loess Plateau, starting an artistic journey with northern Shaanxi as the creative matrix. In the following six decades and more, he went deep into northern Shaanxi dozens of times, living, eating, and working together with the local people. He measured the Loess Land with his feet, accumulated a vast amount of life materials, and created more than 30,000 works. He became a representative of the "Zhejiang School of Figure Painting" and the founder of the Huangtu School of Painting. He also painted the portrait of Mao Zedong for the fifth set of RMB, integrating art into the daily life of the public.
In 2004, Liu Wenxi officially founded the Huangtu School of Painting, with the artistic tenet of "knowing people well, being strict in modeling, emphasizing the use of brush and ink, and seeking innovation". Rooted in the Loess Land, the school focuses on the people and life in northern Shaanxi. It combines the brush and ink techniques of traditional Chinese painting with realistic themes, and advocates artists to go deep into the grassroots to depict the images of the people with sincere emotions, and convey the culture and spirit of the Loess Land. Thus, it has become a school of painting with distinctive regional characteristics and profound humanistic connotations in the contemporary Chinese painting circle.

The painting adopts the classic vertical scroll format, highlighting the subject with concise blank space. The elderly man sits sideways, occupying the visual center. The curves of his body and the trends of his clothing folds form a stable triangular composition, endowing the picture with a calm and profound feeling. The rough lines outlined by the brush precisely shape the old man's outline: a face with wrinkles like crisscrossing gullies, hands with prominent joints, and loose clothes with stacked folds. Through the changes in the density and thickness of the lines, the weathered posture of the old man is presented, condensing the simplicity and tenacity of the people on the Loess Plateau in every detail of the modeling.
It uses the concept of "shaping with lines" in traditional Chinese painting and integrates realistic skills. Dry ink rubbing is used to express skin texture and clothing texture, such as facial wrinkles and plackets. Through the changes of thickness, dryness and wetness, it simulates the rough texture of the Loess Land. Details such as tobacco pouches and portable utensils are outlined with delicate lines, forming a contrast with the large-stroke clothing patterns, which not only enriches the layers of the picture but also strengthens the real feeling of life. This kind of brush and ink is an innovation to traditional ink painting, making the ancient techniques suitable for modern figure modeling and conveying the humanistic atmosphere of the Loess Land.
The old man wears a traditional turban, his face is engraved with the traces of time, and his eyes are deep and peaceful, as if hiding his attachment to the Loess Land and the stories of his life. The posture of holding a tobacco pouch is natural and relaxed, reflecting the daily state of an old farmer in northern Shaanxi. With his exquisite realistic ability, Liu Wenxi captures the expression of the character - the indifference of perseverance after suffering and the simplicity of blending with the land, making the "old man of the Loess Land" not only an individual portrait but also a spiritual symbol of the northern Shaanxi labor group, arousing the audience's empathy for this land and its people.
Northern Shaanxi is the holy land of the Chinese revolution, and the Loess Land carries a heavy history and culture. The theme of old farmers is the core of Liu Wenxi's art. He does not paint only individuals but the group that has been plowing the Loess Land for generations. From *Four Generations of Grandparents and Grandchildren* to *The Old Man of the Loess Land*, he continues to focus on the people of northern Shaanxi, excavating their hardworking, optimistic and tenacious spirit in harsh environments, so that the human landscape on the Loess Land becomes a carrier of national spirit inheritance through art, filling the gap in the art world's in-depth expression of specific regions and groups.
The work "records for the people" in an artistic way. Liu Wenxi has taken root for more than 60 years and witnessed the changes in northern Shaanxi from poverty to development. The Old Man of the Loess Land is a slice of the era - recording the living conditions and spiritual outlook of traditional old farmers. Through painting, it makes niche art touch the public's emotions, arouses respect for the working people, and preserves the humanistic historical materials of northern Shaanxi for future generations. It practices "literature and art serving the people", interprets the value of art originating from life and giving back to life, and becomes an emotional bond connecting artists, the people of the Loess Land and the audience.
From the realistic exploration of Chairman Mao and the Shepherd in the early stage to the embryonic form of the Huangtu School of Painting laid by Four Generations of Grandparents and Grandchildren, The Old Man of the Loess Land is a representative of the mature style. It continues the in-depth portrayal of characters in northern Shaanxi, with more concise and sophisticated brush and ink, and more emphasis on spiritual refinement in modeling. Compared with the previous works, it has less greenness and more thickness in the understanding of the humanities of the Loess Land, and integrates realism and freehand brushwork, tradition and modernity more naturally, marking the advancement of his art from "recording life" to "transmitting spirit".
As a typical work of the Huangtu School of Painting, it provides a model for later painters: demonstrating how to dig deep into life for themes, how to use traditional brush and ink to express realistic characters, and how to endow works with humanistic depth. It proves the feasibility of the path of the Huangtu School of Painting "rooted in the land and depicting the people", and inspires the members of the school and similar creators to inherit the culture of the Loess Land with sincere creation, so that the works of the Huangtu School of Painting are not only artistic creations but also important media for regional cultural communication and spiritual inheritance.
The Old Man of the Loess Land is a bright pearl in Liu Wenxi's artistic career and a landmark work of the Huangtu School of Painting and Chinese rural theme painting. With brush and ink as the language, it tells the story of the Loess Land and the spirit of the people. It crosses the boundaries of artistic creation, humanistic record and social communication, and becomes a bridge connecting the past and the present, artists and the public, regional culture and national spirit, continuing to release deep and lasting value in art history and social culture.
