As a highly influential contemporary Chinese painter, Zhang Hua's artistic growth is rooted in the profound soil of traditional Chinese painting. He has long been immersed in the study of landscape painting, absorbing the essence of composition, brushwork, and artistic conception, while integrating his own insights into nature and life, forming a unique creative style. Zhang Hua's landscape paintings outline the charm of mountains and rivers with delicate and tensile brushstrokes, conveying humanistic feelings.  

The picture takes the overlapping peaks as the main framework. The peaks come in various forms: some are steep and precipitous, like sharp blades piercing the sky; others are relatively gentle, with the traces of years of erosion vividly shown in their texture and folds. The painter skillfully combines traditional landscape painting techniques such as "axe-cut texture" (Fupicun) and "hemp-fiber texture" (Pimacun) to vividly depict the texture of mountains and rocks. The peaks at different levels stretch from near to far. Through the gradual transition of ink from dark to light and brushstrokes from solid to virtual, a profound sense of space is created, as if viewers can step into the painting and explore the secluded realm along the mountain range.  

"Pine and cypress" are the core images in the painting. Several vigorous pine trees stand tall, rooted among the rocks, with twisted and sturdy trunks showing tenacious vitality. The pine needles are meticulously depicted with fine brushstrokes,疏密有致 (dense or sparse) and layered, reflecting both the tough texture of pine and cypress and their lush vitality through the variation of ink shades. In traditional Chinese culture, pine and cypress symbolize longevity, tenacity, and unyielding spirit. In this painting, they are not just natural scenery but spiritual symbols. The meaning of "evergreen" is intuitively presented through the form of pine and cypress and their cultural connotations.  

The mountains are shrouded in mist, like a gauzy curtain, adding a hazy beauty to the picture and further enhancing the ethereal artistic conception of the landscape. The rendering of mist uses the blending of light ink and water, naturally smudging to make the peaks loom and create a contrast between reality and illusion. There are also gurgling streams and small houses dotted in between. The streams inject a dynamic atmosphere into the picture, while the houses add a touch of life interest, making the grand landscape scene warm with the breath of human life and implying the concept of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

In this work, Zhang Hua demonstrates exquisite mastery of brush and ink. In terms of brushwork, when outlining the contours of mountains and rocks, the lines are vigorous and powerful, like "iron paintings and silver hooks," while when shaping the trunks of pines and cypresses, the strokes are both flexible and tough, reflecting their twisted postures. The rhythm and韵律 (rhythm) of rubbing, dotting, and dyeing are appropriately handled, enriching the layers of the painting. In terms of ink application, the five tones of ink—浓 (dark), 淡 (light), 干 (dry), 湿 (wet), and 焦 (charred)—are all employed. Dark ink highlights the main body of the mountains and rocks and the key parts of pines and cypresses; light ink creates the distant charm of clouds, mist, and faraway mountains; the combination of dry and wet ink shows the texture of mountains and rocks and the layers of vegetation; and charred ink serves as the finishing touch, strengthening the spiritual intensity of the painting, making brush and ink a medium to convey emotions and artistic conception.  

Through the combination of elements such as mountains and rivers, pines and cypresses, clouds and mist, Evergreen Pines and Cypresses creates an artistic conception that is magnificent yet quiet, distant yet full of vitality. The magnificence is reflected in the imposing manner of the towering peaks; the quietness stems from the secluded clarity of the winding clouds and mist; the distance is the sense of time-space extension brought by the spatial layers and hazy atmosphere; and the vitality is shown by the lush pines and cypresses and the dynamic streams. When viewers gaze at the painting, they can temporarily escape the hustle and bustle of the world, immerse themselves in this landscape conception, and obtain spiritual peace and awe of the great power of nature.

Evergreen Pines and Cypresses borrows the image of pines and cypresses to inherit the traditional humanistic spirit that推崇 (advocates) tenacious character and pursues spiritual immortality, arousing viewers' yearning for and adherence to noble qualities.  

In the painting, the grandeur of the landscape and the evergreenness of pines and cypresses show the greatness and eternity of natural life. The painter praises nature in the form of art, conveying awe and praise for natural vitality, reminding people to pay attention to and respect nature, understand the cycle and endlessness of natural life, and seek spiritual belonging in the relationship between man and nature.
