Jiaqing Tongbao and Daoguang Tongbao, as currencies of different periods in the Qing Dynasty, carry rich historical information. They are not only important physical materials for studying the economy, culture, and politics of the Qing Dynasty but also highly concerned varieties in the field of coin collection. Through in-depth understanding of them, we can better appreciate the charm of ancient Chinese currency culture and feel the vicissitudes of history. Both for history enthusiasts and coin collectors, Jiaqing Tongbao and Daoguang Tongbao have irreplaceable value.
During the Jiaqing period (1796 - 1820), the Qing Dynasty had passed the glory of the Kangxi-Qianlong heyday and gradually entered a period of decline. Politically, the bureaucratic system was corrupt, and corruption was rampant. For example, the He Shen case was a typical reflection of official corruption at that time, which greatly affected the administrative efficiency of the country and fiscal revenue. Economically, the rapid population growth brought pressure on land, the contradiction between more people and less land was prominent, and there was no significant improvement in agricultural production technology, resulting in grain output being difficult to meet the needs of the growing population. At the same time, although the commodity economy had a certain development, the traditional policy of emphasizing agriculture and suppressing commerce still existed, restricting the further prosperity of commerce. In this context, the minting and circulation of currency were crucial for stabilizing the economic order and ensuring people's livelihood.
After Emperor Jiaqing ascended the throne, he faced many financial problems left over from the late Qianlong period, including the chaos of currency circulation. Due to the serious phenomenon of private and illegal minting, the quality of currency in the market was uneven, which not only affected normal commodity exchange but also weakened the government's ability to control the economy. In order to rectify the currency order, the Jiaqing Dynasty began to mint Jiaqing Tongbao on a large scale.
Jiaqing Tongbao is generally a round coin with a square hole. The front is cast with four Chinese characters "Jiaqing Tongbao" in regular script, which is dignified and neat, with moderate thickness of strokes, reflecting the calligraphic art style of that time. On the back, the Manchu character "Bao" (meaning treasure) is cast on the left side of the hole, and the Manchu character indicating the mint name is cast on the right side, such as "Quan" (representing the Hubu Baoquan Mint) and "Yuan" (representing the Gongbu Baoyuan Mint). Many mints across the country cast it, and the coins cast by each mint are slightly different in font and shape.
The traditional sand casting process was mainly adopted. First, the mother coin was made. The mother coin was generally made of fine copper and carved by skilled craftsmen. Its characters and patterns were clear and exquisite, serving as the mold for casting child coins. Then, using the mother coin as a mold, a sand mold was made, and the molten copper liquid was poured into the sand mold. After cooling, it was taken out and processed through grinding, trimming, and other procedures to make the circulating Jiaqing Tongbao. This casting process was relatively mature at that time, but due to differences in the technical level of each mint, the quality of craftsmen, and the quality of raw materials, the quality of the cast coins also varied.
As the main circulating currency at that time, Jiaqing Tongbao was widely used in various aspects of social life. It was indispensable for daily commodity transactions, such as purchasing food, cloth, and other daily necessities, as well as paying taxes and labor remuneration. Due to the large casting quantity and a circulation period of up to 25 years, the number of existing Jiaqing Tongbao is relatively large. However, after more than 200 years of trials and tribulations, coupled with factors such as wars, wear and tear, and remelting and recasting, Jiaqing Tongbao with intact appearance is not common. Currently, most Jiaqing Tongbao on the market are circulation products with varying degrees of wear and rust on the surface, while those uncirculated or with excellent appearance have become the target of collectors.
As a currency in the mid-Qing Dynasty, Jiaqing Tongbao witnessed the historical process of the Qing Dynasty from prosperity to decline and has important historical and cultural value. By studying the casting technology and version characteristics of Jiaqing Tongbao, we can understand the social and economic conditions, political system, and cultural and artistic level of that time. It is a physical witness of history and provides precious materials for later generations to study the history of the Qing Dynasty.
The price of ordinary versions of Jiaqing Tongbao is relatively affordable, generally ranging from a few yuan to dozens of yuan, suitable for beginner collectors. However, some special versions, such as the ones with a giant star on the back, a moon pattern on the back mentioned earlier, and mother coins with exquisite appearance, have higher market prices, some reaching hundreds or even thousands of yuan. With the continuous development of the collection market, the collection value of Jiaqing Tongbao is gradually increasing, with certain investment potential.

During the Daoguang period (1821 - 1850), the Qing Dynasty was confronted with even more severe internal troubles and external threats. Domestically, land annexation was rampant, peasants lived in extreme hardship, and class contradictions became increasingly acute. Numerous peasant uprisings broke out, such as the Heavenly Reason Sect Uprising, which severely shook the ruling foundation of the Qing Dynasty. Economically, the problem of silver outflow became increasingly prominent, mainly due to the massive import of opium. The泛滥 of opium not only undermined people's physical health but also led to a large amount of silver flowing out of China, resulting in a severe silver shortage and worsening the phenomenon of "expensive silver and cheap copper coins". Under such circumstances, the minting and circulation of copper coins were also greatly affected.
To address the fiscal crisis and the chaos in currency circulation, the Daoguang court continued to mint copper coins, giving birth to Daoguang Tongbao. However, as the outflow of silver caused copper prices to rise, the cost of minting copper coins increased. The government had to take measures to cut costs, which in turn affected the quality of Daoguang Tongbao.
Daoguang Tongbao is also a round coin with a square hole, with a diameter slightly smaller than that of Jiaqing Tongbao. On the obverse, the four Chinese characters "Daoguang Tongbao" are cast in regular script. Compared with Jiaqing Tongbao, the characters of Daoguang Tongbao are slimmer and longer, with thinner strokes. On the reverse, the Manchu character "Bao" (meaning "treasure") is cast on the left side of the hole, and the right side is cast with a Manchu character indicating the mint. Common mints include Baoquan Mint, Baoyuan Mint, Baosu Mint, and Baozhe Mint, etc.
The traditional sand - casting technique was still employed. However, due to the financial difficulties at that time, corners were cut during the casting process to reduce costs. Some Daoguang Tongbao coins were of poor copper quality with a high lead content, making them soft and prone to wear. Moreover, in terms of casting craftsmanship, they were not as exquisite as Jiaqing Tongbao; some coins had unclear characters and patterns, and their edges were irregular.
Daoguang Tongbao was one of the main circulating currencies at that time and was widely used in various economic activities. Nevertheless, the circulation of Daoguang Tongbao was severely impacted by the outbreak of the Opium War and domestic unrest. On the one hand, the war damaged the social economy, reduced commodity exchange, and slowed down the circulation of currency. On the other hand, the outflow of silver aggravated the problem of "expensive silver and cheap copper coins", leading to a decline in the purchasing power of copper coins. People were more willing to hoard silver, which also affected the circulation of Daoguang Tongbao.
In terms of existing quantities, there are quite a number of Daoguang Tongbao coins. However, due to the uneven casting quality and long - term circulation wear, there are not many coins in good condition. Some special editions and large - sized coins are relatively rare in existence and have become popular items in the collection market.

Daoguang Tongbao witnessed the historical changes of the Qing Dynasty around the Opium War and is an important material object for studying modern Chinese history. It reflects the predicaments and challenges faced by Chinese society in politics, economy, culture, and other aspects at that time, and thus has extremely high historical and cultural value.
