Wu Yungen is a towering figure in the world of purple clay (zisha) art. His creation, the purple clay *shipiao* (stone ladle) teapot, stands as a highly representative masterpiece in the treasure trove of purple clay art, embodying profound cultural connotations and exquisite craftsmanship value.

In the early days of the purple clay industry, the craft of making teapots was mostly passed down through the master-apprentice system. Although this model was conservative, it allowed the craftsmanship to be inherited in a relatively pure environment. During his apprenticeship, Wu Yungen dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his studies, starting with the most basic procedures such as patting clay slabs and shaping, striving for precision in every step. As his skills became increasingly sophisticated, he was not content with mere imitation and began to incorporate his own ideas.

At the beginning of the 20th century, purple clay art faced new development opportunities and challenges. The introduction of Western culture and the surging domestic artistic trends all had an impact on traditional purple clay. With an open mind, Wu Yungen absorbed diverse artistic nutrients while adhering to the core techniques of traditional purple clay, gradually forming his own unique artistic style. His works not only possess the simplicity and elegance of traditional purple clay but also contain the innovative spirit of the times, injecting new vitality into the development of purple clay art.

In terms of color, this purple clay *shipiao* teapot exhibits a deep and温润 (warm and smooth) hue, like ancient jade that has precipitated over the years, exuding a restrained and noble temperament. This color is naturally formed during the high-temperature firing process of purple clay due to the redox reactions of mineral components. Each teapot has slightly different colors, which precisely reflects the naturalness and uniqueness of purple clay, making each work an irreplaceable artistic treasure.

The shape of the Shipiao (stone ladle) teapot is like a ladle of clear water fetched from nature—simple and straightforward yet infinitely charming. The character "shi" (stone) in its name embodies a rustic and solid texture, as if it breathes in harmony with mountain rocks; the character "piao" (ladle) directly points to its appearance resembling a water ladle. In traditional culture, "piao" is often associated with the life of hermits and virtuous scholars, symbolizing an attitude towards life of being indifferent to fame and fortune, and finding contentment in simplicity.

The purple clay Shipiao teapot crafted by Wu Yungen further integrates this cultural connotation with his own artistic philosophy. What the teapot body contains is not only practical functionality but also a spiritual sustenance—it represents the yearning of literati and refined scholars for a peaceful and natural life, and is a concrete manifestation of the "harmony between man and nature" thought in traditional Chinese culture within purple clay art.

The purple clay used for this teapot is high-quality purple mud unique to Yixing. Yixing purple clay is deeply buried in the rock layers of mountains such as Huanglong Mountain, and has formed a unique mineral structure through millions of years of geological changes. The main components of purple mud include quartz, mica, hematite, etc., which endow it with excellent properties.

In terms of appearance, the purple mud has a温润 and mellow color, showing a deep purple hue, as charming as purple clouds, yet with a calm sense of antiquity. When touched by hand, one can feel the delicate yet not slippery texture of the clay, like a rough jade carefully polished by nature.

During the firing process, purple mud performs exceptionally well. Due to its good air permeability and stability, after high-temperature firing, the surface of the teapot will form a温润 patina. As time goes by with use, the patina becomes thicker and the color more vivid—this is what people often call the "teapot nurturing" effect. Each time the teapot is nourished by tea water, it is like a spiritual communication with the teapot, gradually endowing it with a unique sense of vitality.

Wu Yungen's purple clay Shipiao teapot has an overall simple and elegant shape, yet reveals exquisite craftsmanship in details. The teapot body is trapezoidal, narrowing gradually from top to bottom, with smooth and natural lines, free of any stiffness. This shape not only meets practical needs, being able to hold enough tea water, but also gives a sense of stability and dignity visually.

The fit between the lid and the body is extremely tight. The lid surface is flat, and the edges are rounded. The design of the lid is not a simple covering, but forms an organic integrity with the body, as if it naturally grows out of the body. The lid knob is bridge-shaped, small and exquisite, which is not only convenient to hold but also complements the overall shape, playing the role of adding the finishing touch.

The design of the spout is even more ingenious. It extends from one side of the body with straight and forceful lines, ensuring smooth water flow. The angle and length of the spout have been precisely calculated to ensure that when pouring water, the water flow forms a parabolic shape without dripping or splashing. The handle adopts a side handle design, symmetrically distributed with the spout, with a graceful curve, providing a comfortable grip that conforms to ergonomic principles.

The decoration on the teapot body is a major highlight of Wu Yungen's purple clay Shipiao teapot. One side is carved with a bamboo pattern. In traditional Chinese culture, bamboo has rich symbolic meanings, representing nobility, tenacity, and modesty with integrity. With simple carving techniques, Wu Yungen outlines the tall and straight posture of bamboo and the vivid shape of bamboo leaves. Though only a few strokes, he fully expresses the charm of bamboo, as if one can feel the tranquility of a bamboo forest.

The other side is engraved with the text "Heaven's ladle, men may drink from; mountains and rivers, their melodies flow long" in running script. The font is powerful and the charm is vivid. The content of the text not only points out the "ladle" characteristic of the Shipiao teapot but also creates a leisurely artistic conception of drinking water with a ladle among mountains and rivers, perfectly combining the poetic flavor of literati with the practicality of purple clay.

These decorations are not simple additions, but set off each other with the teapot's shape and clay material, jointly forming a harmonious artistic whole. The carving techniques are exquisite, with appropriate depth, neither damaging the texture of the purple clay nor endowing the decorative patterns and text with a three-dimensional sense, thus enhancing the artistic value of the teapot.

In terms of teapot-making craftsmanship, Wu Yungen showed a master-level standard. He adopted the fully handcrafted method, striving for excellence in every step. When patting the clay slabs, the force is even to ensure uniform thickness, laying a good foundation for shaping the teapot body. During the shaping process, the grasp of lines is extremely precise. Through actions such as finger pressing and scraping, the curves of the teapot body are made smooth and natural.

When joining parts such as the body with the bottom and the lid, the joints are handled extremely delicately, with almost no visible traces of splicing, as if the teapot is carved from a single piece of clay. The firing process is also crucial. Wu Yungen has rich experience in controlling the kiln temperature, and can accurately grasp the firing temperature and time according to the characteristics of the clay, ensuring that the teapot does not deform or crack after firing, and can present the best color and texture.

Wu Yungen's purple clay Shipiao teapot is a perfect unity of practicality and art. As a tea utensil, it can well perform the function of brewing tea, and the air permeability of purple clay helps to release the aroma and flavor of tea leaves. As a work of art, its shape, clay material, and decorations all reach a high level, possessing unique aesthetic value.
