Tektites are a type of natural glass material, whose formation is closely related to celestial impact events originating outside the Earth. When small celestial bodies such as asteroids and comets collide with the Earth’s surface at high speed, enormous energy is released instantaneously. This energy causes rocks, soil, and other materials in the impact area to rapidly melt and vaporize under extreme conditions of high temperature and pressure. These materials then cool and solidify quickly, eventually forming this glassy-structured substance known as tektites.

In terms of appearance, tektites typically exhibit a variety of colors, with common ones including black, dark brown, and green. The tektites in this group are dark brown. Their surfaces often have unique features, such as air pits of varying sizes and shapes—similar to dimples left by pressing a thumb. These air pits form during the tektite’s formation process, resulting from the flow and volatilization of surface materials under high temperatures. Additionally, tektites may have textures like flow lines or ripples, which are traces of material flow during the rapid cooling process.

The formation of tektites stems from celestial impact events. When a small celestial body collides with the Earth at an extremely high speed (usually reaching tens of kilometers per second, or even hundreds of kilometers per second in some cases), the materials near the impact point undergo intense compression and heating. The energy generated by the impact can instantly raise the local temperature to several thousand degrees Celsius, while the pressure surges to dozens or even hundreds of gigapascals. Under such extreme conditions, the minerals in rocks and soil melt rapidly, forming high-temperature melts.

As the impact energy is released, these high-temperature melts are ejected into the air. During their flight, some of the melts undergo intense friction with the surrounding air, heating up further and undergoing complex physical and chemical reactions. Subsequently, in the high-altitude environment, the melts cool rapidly. The atoms and molecules inside them do not have enough time to arrange themselves in an orderly manner to form crystals; instead, they solidify quickly in a disordered state, ultimately forming a glassy structure. For some larger melt clumps, the surface may solidify first during the cooling process, while the interior remains in a high-temperature liquid state. As the internal heat dissipates and the material contracts, features such as air pits form on the surface.

Tektites are direct products of celestial bodies colliding with the Earth, and they preserve a wealth of information about the impact events. By analyzing the chemical composition, isotopic composition, and other properties of tektites, researchers can infer key details such as the type of impacting celestial body (e.g., asteroid, comet), the energy and speed of the impact, and the timing of the event. This provides crucial clues for studying major celestial impact events in Earth’s history, and holds great significance for understanding the Earth’s evolutionary process, as well as the origin and development of life.

Tektites contain material components from outer space. Studying their mineral composition, trace elements, and other characteristics helps scientists understand the composition and evolution of early solar system materials. For example, through analyzing rare elements in tektites, researchers can deduce the abundance and distribution patterns of elements in the universe, as well as phenomena like material exchange and chemical reactions during the formation and evolution of planets.

The unique glassy structure and physicochemical properties of tektites offer new insights for materials science research. Their special structure, formed under extreme conditions, endows them with excellent properties such as high hardness and a certain degree of toughness. Drawing on the formation mechanism and structural characteristics of tektites, researchers can develop new types of glass materials and composite materials, which can be applied in fields like aerospace and the electronics industry.

Throughout human history, tektites have long been shrouded in mystery and embedded in cultural legends. In ancient times, due to a lack of scientific understanding of their origin, people often regarded tektites as gifts from the heavens or tokens of the gods. Some tribes would craft tektites into ornaments or ritual objects, believing they possessed mystical powers to ward off evil, dispel disasters, and protect safety.

In modern times, tektites continue to attract widespread attention. They are not only objects of scientific research but also important elements in literature and film/television works, inspiring people’s boundless imagination and desire to explore the universe.

Tektites—this mysterious material from the depths of the universe—captivate countless people with their unique formation mechanism, rich scientific research value, and fascinating collection appeal. They are witnesses to the interaction between the universe and the Earth, and important clues for humanity to explore the mysteries of the cosmos. With the continuous advancement of science and technology and the deepening of tektite research, it is believed that tektites will reveal more mysteries about the universe, the Earth, and life. Meanwhile, they will continue to exude unique charm in the collection market and cultural fields.
