The fossils of Keichousaurus hui were first discovered in Lvyin Village, Dingxiao Town, Xingyi City, Guizhou Province in 1957 by Hu Chengzhi. After research, they were named by Professor Yang Zhongjian. These fossils represent the first recorded Triassic marine reptile fossils found in Asia.

The fossil-bearing horizons are concentrated in shallow marine limestone dating back to the Ladinian Age of the Middle Triassic (approximately 247-237 million years ago). The fossils of Keichousaurus hui coexist with those of other organisms such as Peltopleurus orientalis (Eastern Shield-scaled Fish) and crinoids, forming a complete ancient ecological chain.

In 2025, the Global Consensus on Value clearly defined its international status as a "model for understanding the construction of modern marine ecosystems". Currently, the fossil site has been included in the Tentative List of World Heritage.

As a "blue treasure Morphological Structure:The body length ranges from 10 to 30 centimeters. The head is triangular, with eye sockets accounting for 1/3 of the head length—an adaptation to low-light environments. It has up to 20 cervical vertebrae, giving the neck high flexibility. The limbs are slender and webbed, and the 37 caudal vertebrae form a whip-like tail. Skin impressions and the arrangement of fetal bones inside maternal specimens are visible in some fossils, confirming its viviparous reproductive mode (ovoviviparity).

Ecological Niche:It mainly inhabited the intertidal zone and fed on small fish and crustaceans. Its forelimbs were not fully specialized into fin-like structures and retained clawed toes, indicating that it was in the early stage of adapting to an aquatic lifestyle. Additionally, the pelvic girdle (hindlimb girdle) was not fused to the sacral vertebrae, which suggests it lived an entirely aquatic life.

Globally, there are only over 2,000 known fossils of Keichousaurus hui, among which fewer than 300 are complete specimens. Moreover, more than 90% of these fossils are housed in museums. In the fossil assemblage newly discovered in Naimaigu Village, Xingyi in 2025, only 17 complete specimens are suitable for scientific research, which has directly led to a sharp decline in the circulation volume of legally traded specimens in the market.

As the curator of the Xingyi Geopark Museum stated: "Every fossil is a key to unlocking the mysteries of the ancient ocean, and its value will be continuously re-evaluated as humanity's understanding of the evolution of life deepens."

A top-tier "S"-shaped curled Keichousaurus hui specimen was sold for 11.08 million yuan at Poly's Spring Auction in 2013. This transaction demonstrates both the collection value and market value of Keichousaurus hui fossils. Measuring 27 cm by 18 cm, this specimen is in excellent condition with clearly visible skeletal details, making it a rare and precious piece.
