In 1912, the Republic of China was founded, but the domestic currency system at that time was extremely chaotic. Since the late Qing Dynasty, a large number of foreign silver dollars had circulated in China, with various types such as the Spanish Carolus dollar and the Mexican Eagle dollar. Meanwhile, the silver dollars and copper coins minted in different parts of China were also of diverse kinds and varying fineness. This situation seriously hindered the circulation of commodities and the development of the economy. After Yuan Shikai took office as the provisional President of the Republic of China, he decided to implement a national "unified currency system" to consolidate his rule, stabilize the financial order, and develop the national economy.
On February 7, 1914, Yuan Shikai issued the Regulations on National Currency and the Detailed Rules for the Implementation of the Regulations on National Currency in the form of a presidential decree. These regulations stipulated that the national currency included 4 types of silver coins (1 yuan, 50 cents, 20 cents, 10 cents), 1 type of nickel coin (5 cents), and 5 types of copper coins (2 cents, 1 cent, 0.5 cents, 0.2 cents, 0.1 cents). Among them, the 1-yuan silver coin featured a profile portrait of Yuan Shikai and the year of issuance on the obverse, and a grain pattern (representing bumper harvests) and the denomination on the reverse. This was the later well-known "Yuan Datou" silver dollar. With its unified fineness and standardized weight, the "Yuan Datou" silver dollar quickly circulated widely across the country and gradually became the main currency in circulation.
Gansu is located in the inland northwest of China. In the early years of the Republic of China, its economy was relatively underdeveloped, and the currency circulation situation was even more complicated. In 1926, Feng Yuxiang led the National Army to station in Gansu. At that time, Gansu faced difficulties in local finance and chaos in the financial order. The currencies circulating in the market were of various types, including those issued by the central government and a large number of privately minted local currencies. This severely affected the exchange of commodities and the normal operation of the economy.
To cover military and administrative expenses, stabilize the financial market, and develop the local economy, the National Army decided to mint silver dollars using the Lanzhou Mint. The predecessor of the Lanzhou Mint was the Copper Coin Bureau attached to the Gansu Machinery Bureau, which had a certain foundation in currency minting. However, due to its remote location, outdated equipment, relatively backward technology, and numerous difficulties in the supply of raw materials, it had obvious gaps compared with the Central Mint. Against this background, the Gansu version of "Yuan Datou" came into being. While inheriting the basic structure of the central version of "Yuan Datou", it formed a unique style due to the local minting conditions.
The most prominent feature of the Gansu version "Yuan Datou" is the Chinese characters "甘肃" (Gansu) engraved on the coin surface, which is not found in other versions of "Yuan Datou". The characters "甘肃" are bold and powerful, with uniform stroke thickness and a reasonable layout, harmonizing with the overall style of the coin surface. They are generally located below Yuan Shikai's portrait, near the coin edge, and have become one of the important marks for identifying the Gansu version "Yuan Datou".
The font style of "中华民国三年" (3rd Year of the Republic of China) on the coin also has unique characteristics. Compared with the central version, its strokes are slightly thicker, and the spacing between characters is moderate, giving a sense of steadiness. The way of writing the character "年" (year) is different from that of "Yuan Datou" coins of other years—it does not have the character "造" (made), which is a common feature of the 3rd Year of the Republic of China "Yuan Datou" coins. However, the Gansu version has its own characteristics in the starting and ending points of the strokes; for example, the two ends of the strokes of the character "三" (three) slightly tilt upward. The English inscriptions and other texts on the coin also have slight differences from the central version in terms of font size and spacing.
The portrait engraving on the Gansu version "Yuan Datou" is extremely exquisite. Yuan Shikai's portrait appears more plump and three-dimensional than that on other versions. The facial expression is vivid, and the facial features are depicted in meticulous detail: the eyes are bright and piercing, with clear lines at the corners of the eyes that convey a certain demeanor; the nose has a strong sense of three-dimensionality with a straight bridge; the outline of the mouth and the details of the corners of the mouth are handled appropriately; the beard is distinct, looking very realistic.
The hair is depicted with clear strands and texture, showing a natural curly state with a strong sense of layering. The lines of the collar are smooth, and the folds on the collar and details such as buttons are engraved very clearly. The stars on the epaulets have a strong three-dimensional sense and are relatively neat, with sharp points. Compared with the central version, the shape and detail handling of the epaulets are slightly different—they appear wider and thicker, reflecting a unique craftsmanship style.
The grain pattern on the reverse is another feature of the Gansu version "Yuan Datou". The grains in the Gansu version are plump, and the lines are more bold and unconstrained. Compared with the central version "Yuan Datou", the shape of the grains is more vivid and natural, with a strong sense of layering. The curvature of the ears of grain, the shape and distribution of the leaves all have their own characteristics, giving a visual impression of a bumper harvest.
In the grain pattern of the Gansu version "Yuan Datou", some unique hidden marks often appear. These marks include subtle lines hidden between the grains and special symbols on the grain leaves. These hidden marks were set by the mint at that time for anti-counterfeiting and distinguishing versions, and they have important reference value for identifying the authenticity of the Gansu version "Yuan Datou" and classifying its sub-versions. The position and shape of the hidden marks may vary among the Gansu version "Yuan Datou" coins minted in different batches, but they all follow certain rules.
The mintage of the Gansu version "Yuan Datou" was relatively small. On the one hand, the production capacity of the Lanzhou Mint was limited—restricted by factors such as equipment, technology, and raw materials, it could not mint silver dollars on a large scale like the Central Mint. On the other hand, the economy of Gansu was relatively underdeveloped during the Republic of China, and the demand for silver dollars was relatively small, which also restricted its mintage. As time passed, after years of circulation, wear and tear, and collection accumulation, the number of existing Gansu version "Yuan Datou" coins has become even scarcer.
In the collection market, scarcity is often an important factor determining the value of a collection. Due to its unique version and small number of existing pieces, the Gansu version "Yuan Datou" has attracted great attention and pursuit from a large number of coin collectors. Especially in recent years, with the continuous boom of the coin collection market, the demand for the Gansu version "Yuan Datou" has been increasing, and its market price has been rising. Some Gansu version "Yuan Datou" coins with good condition and rare sub-versions have even become the target of collectors' competition, setting high prices repeatedly at auctions.
The Gansu version "Yuan Datou" carries rich historical and cultural connotations. It not only witnessed the reform of the monetary and financial system in Gansu during the Republic of China, but also reflected the development of the local economy, politics, and society at that time. From the perspective of currency culture, the unique characters, patterns, and minting craftsmanship of the Gansu version "Yuan Datou" embody Gansu's response to and innovation of the national unified currency system in a specific historical period, and are an important manifestation of the diversity of modern Chinese currency culture.
For scholars studying the local history, economic history, and financial history of northwest China during the Republic of China, the Gansu version "Yuan Datou" is a precious material object. Through the study of its minting background, version characteristics, and circulation situation, they can gain an in-depth understanding of the economic development level, currency minting technology, financial policies, and social culture of Gansu at that time, providing strong support for academic research in related fields.

In 1931, the revolutionary base areas led by the Communist Party of China were trapped in the tight encirclement and suppression by the reactionary Kuomintang forces. The Kuomintang reactionaries launched brutal military encirclement campaigns and imposed a strict economic blockade on the Soviet areas, attempting to fundamentally strangle the fledgling Soviet regime. Economically, the Kuomintang prohibited material exchanges between the Soviet areas and the outside world, cutting off the supply channels of materials to the Soviet areas. This led to an extreme shortage of daily necessities such as grain, salt, and medicine in the Soviet areas, skyrocketing prices, and chaos in the financial order.
At that time, the currency system within the Soviet areas had not yet been fully established and improved. A variety of currencies circulated in the market, including some old silver dollars, copper coins, and currencies issued by the Kuomintang. Due to material shortages, the purchasing power of currencies continued to decline, seriously affecting the lives of the people. To stabilize the financial market, ensure the supply of materials for the military and civilians in the base areas, and at the same time demonstrate the Soviet regime's control over currency, the Soviet government had to take a series of emergency measures to deal with this severe situation.
Against this background, the Soviet government decided to transform and utilize the seized "Yuan Datou" silver coins. The "Yuan Datou" silver coin was a widely circulated currency recognized by the people at that time, with high credibility and value. The Soviet government stamped the character "苏维埃" (Soviet) on the seized "Yuan Datou" silver coins of the 3rd Year of the Republic of China, making them the currency circulating within the Soviet areas. On the one hand, this approach could make use of the original value of the "Yuan Datou" silver coins to stabilize the financial order; on the other hand, by stamping the "苏维埃" mark, the ownership of these currencies was clearly defined, the sovereignty of the Soviet regime was demonstrated, and the people's sense of identity and belonging to the Soviet regime was enhanced.
The work of stamping was undertaken by relevant institutions designated by the Soviet government, usually in a relatively hidden and safe environment. Due to the harsh conditions in the Soviet areas at that time, advanced equipment and technology were lacking, so the stamping method was relatively simple. Generally, a manual stamping method was adopted, using a specially made steel stamp to imprint the characters "苏维埃" on the surface of the silver coins.
The "苏维埃" stamp is the most obvious symbol of this version of "Yuan Datou". The stamp is usually located on the right side of the characters "中华民国三年" (3rd Year of the Republic of China) on the coin surface, with neat and standardized fonts. The top part of the character "苏" (Su) is relatively flat, and its two vertical strokes are slightly inwardly curved, presenting a stable shape; the silk radical of the character "维" (Wei) has clear strokes, and the three parts of the radical are arranged in an arc, full of dynamism; the writing of the character "埃" (Ai) also has its unique features, with a compact overall structure and uniform stroke thickness. The stamps added in different batches may have slight differences in font size, spacing, and depth, but the basic font style remains consistent.
Since the stamping was done manually, the quality of the stamps is not entirely consistent. Some stamps are clear and complete, with sharp font edges and moderate depth, clearly showing the shape of the three characters "苏维埃"; while some stamps may have blurred fonts or incomplete strokes due to insufficient stamping force or wear of the steel stamp. In addition, the position of the stamp on the coin surface may also have a certain deviation—some may be slightly higher or lower, and some may have a certain tilt angle. However, generally speaking, they are all concentrated in the area near the right side of the characters "中华民国三年".
Except for the stamp, the silver coin itself is basically similar to the ordinary "Yuan Datou" of the 3rd Year of the Republic of China. The obverse features a profile portrait of Yuan Shikai, and the details such as Yuan Shikai's facial expression, facial features, hair, and collar are consistent with those of the ordinary "Yuan Datou" of the 3rd Year of the Republic of China. However, since most of these silver coins were seized from the people, their original conditions varied. After being circulated and used in the base areas, the coin surfaces often left traces of wear and scratches. Some silver coins may have been circulated in the market for a long time before being seized, resulting in reduced luster on the coin surface and a certain impact on the clarity of the portrait.
The reverse features a grain pattern and the characters "壹圆" (One Yuan). The shape of the grain pattern and the details of the grains and leaves are also similar to those of the ordinary "Yuan Datou" of the 3rd Year of the Republic of China. However, similarly due to circulation and use, the grain pattern on the reverse may be worn or blurred, and the characters "壹圆" may also become less clear due to wear. Nevertheless, compared with ordinary "Yuan Datou" coins, the Soviet-stamped version had a relatively smaller circulation range, mainly concentrated within the Soviet areas. Therefore, in terms of overall condition, some well-preserved silver coins can still maintain relatively clear patterns and characters.
At that time, the Soviet areas were in a difficult environment of blockade and encirclement, with a shortage of materials. The number of "Yuan Datou" silver coins that could be seized was already small, so the number of "Yuan Datou" silver coins stamped with "苏维埃" was limited. Moreover, when stamping, the Soviet government operated according to the actual demand for currency circulation and did not carry out large-scale stamping, which led to a relatively small initial quantity.
The "Yuan Datou" silver coins (Soviet-stamped Version, 3rd Year of the Republic of China) carry important revolutionary historical significance and are physical evidence of the financial struggles of the Communist Party of China during the revolutionary base area period. They witnessed the efforts made by the Soviet regime to stabilize the financial order and ensure people's livelihoods in a difficult environment, and reflected the economic situation, regime construction of the Soviet areas at that time, as well as the people's support and endorsement of the Soviet regime.
For scholars studying the history of the Chinese revolution, the history of the Communist Party of China, and financial history, it is a precious physical material. Through the study of its minting background, circulation, and stamp characteristics, we can gain an in-depth understanding of the economic policies, currency issuance and management of the Communist Party of China during the revolutionary base area period. It provides important physical evidence for academic research in related fields and plays an irreplaceable role in inheriting the red culture and promoting the revolutionary spirit.
