Fu Baoshi (1904-1965) was born into a poor family in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, with his original name being Fu Ruilin. He had a strong interest in painting from an early age. During his teenage years, he worked as an apprentice in a ceramic shop, where he was exposed to folk painting art—this laid a certain foundation for his later artistic creation. Later, he enrolled in Jiangxi First Normal School to study, and began to systematically engage with the theories and techniques of traditional Chinese painting. He held profound admiration especially for Shi Tao’s artistic ideas and works. Shi Tao’s proposition that "brush and ink should keep pace with the times" deeply influenced Fu Baoshi’s artistic concepts, enabling him to always maintain attention to the times and pursuit of innovation in his creation.

In the process of learning traditional painting, Fu Baoshi extensively explored multiple fields such as landscape painting and figure painting, and conducted in-depth research on painting classics and theories since the Jin and Tang dynasties. His mastery of traditional brush and ink techniques became increasingly exquisite, and at the same time, he was also thinking about how to break through the constraints of tradition and blaze an artistic path of his own.

As a great master of Chinese landscape painting in the 20th century, Fu Baoshi left an indelible mark in the history of fine arts with his unique artistic style and exploration of integrating traditional and modern painting. His works not only carry profound traditional cultural heritage but also embody the keen capture and expression of the spirit of the times. This landscape painting is a typical representative of Fu Baoshi’s artistic creations. By conducting an in-depth analysis of its pictorial elements, artistic techniques, cultural connotations, and historical value, we can better appreciate the unique charm of Fu Baoshi’s landscape paintings and the crucial role he played in the development of Chinese painting.

This landscape painting adopts the vertical composition commonly seen in traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The 画面 extends vertically, creating a visual experience of grandeur and depth. In the upper part of the painting, clouds and mist curl around, and a waterfall tumbles down from between towering mountain peaks. Occupying the main visual space of the painting, the waterfall generates a strong visual impact. The flowing water of the waterfall seems dynamic, rushing down along the mountain terrain and enhancing the vitality of the scene.

In the middle part of the painting, clouds and mist pervade, partially covering the mountain peaks. This creates a hazy artistic conception of "clouds and mists appearing and disappearing," endowing the painting with a sense of hierarchy and space. The clouds and mist are rendered using light ink wash techniques, with a balanced mix of light and dark tones, conveying the lightness and ethereality of the clouds and mist.

In the lower part of the painting, the flowing water converges into a pool, around which several huge rocks stand in various shapes. On the bank, several pine trees grow, with sturdy and twisted branches and dense pine needles, demonstrating tenacious vitality. Beside the pines, there is a small bridge, and a figure walks slowly on it—adding a touch of human warmth to the quiet landscape. On the other side of the bridge, a small thatched cottage is hidden under the pine trees, blending seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment. This embodies the ideal realm of "secluding in the mountains and forests" cherished by traditional Chinese literati.

This compositional approach—from the lofty mountains and waterfalls in the upper part, to the clouds and mist in the middle, and then to the pool, pine trees, human figure, and thatched cottage in the lower part—has clear layers and smooth transitions, demonstrating Fu Baoshi’s exquisite grasp of the spatial arrangement of landscapes.

When depicting the mountains and rocks, Fu Baoshi used his self-created "Baoshi texturing method" (Baoshi cun). Through the rapid side-stroke brushing of the ink brush and the gradations of ink density, he vividly portrayed the texture and sense of volume of the mountains and rocks. Unlike the more regular texturing methods in traditional landscape painting—such as "hemp-fiber texturing" (pima cun) and "axe-cut texturing" (fupi cun)—the Baoshi cun is more free, flexible, and expressive, perfectly conveying the grandeur and vastness of the landscape.

For the clouds, mist, and pool in the painting, Fu Baoshi extensively used the techniques of "ink splashing" (pommo) and "ink rendering" (xuanran). During ink splashing, the ink naturally spreads and blurs on the rice paper, creating rich gradations of ink and depicting the haziness of the clouds and mist as well as the depth of the pool. Ink rendering further enhances this effect, harmonizing the black, white, and gray tones of the painting and creating an ethereal and distant artistic conception.

Fu Baoshi’s use of lines also features distinctive characteristics. When depicting the branches of pine trees, his lines are forceful, firm, and winding, demonstrating the tenacity of the pines; when depicting the human figure and the thatched cottage, the lines are more delicate and concise. This contrast with the bold and rough lines used for the landscape enriches the rhythm of the painting.

The painting mainly uses ink wash, with relatively light and elegant coloring. A small amount of ochre is applied to the pine trees to represent the color of their trunks; the figure’s clothing is painted in light hues, harmonizing with the surrounding landscape. This elegant coloring method conforms to the aesthetic concept of "ink wash as the priority" in traditional Chinese landscape painting. At the same time, it better highlights the charm and artistic conception of the landscape, avoiding the interference of colors on the lingering charm of ink wash.

One of the core spirits of traditional Chinese landscape painting is the reverence and admiration for natural landscapes. Through the detailed depiction of mountains and waters, Fu Baoshi’s work showcases the grandeur, magic, and beauty of nature. The towering mountains, rushing waterfalls, and lush pines all embody the majestic power and vibrant vitality of nature. With his brush and ink, the painter conveys his love and reverence for nature—an embodiment of the "unity of man and nature" thought in traditional Chinese culture, which emphasizes the harmonious coexistence and integration of man and nature.

The small bridge, human figure, and thatched cottage in the painting contain the spiritual pursuit of traditional Chinese literati. The traveler on the bridge may be a hermit, wandering between the mountains and waters and enjoying the tranquility and beauty of nature; the thatched cottage symbolizes literati’s yearning for a reclusive life—far from the hustle and bustle of the world, seeking spiritual comfort and freedom in the landscape. The depiction of such a reclusive life is an important theme in traditional Chinese literati painting, and through this work, Fu Baoshi expressed his recognition and pursuit of this literati spirit.

The 20th century, when Fu Baoshi lived, was a period of drastic changes in Chinese society. Although his works take traditional landscapes as their theme, they also reflect the spirit of the times. His landscape paintings are no longer a simple repetition of traditional landscape patterns, but integrate modern aesthetic consciousness and innovative spirit. The creation of the "Baoshi cun" and the emphasis on the formal sense of the painting all reflect his exploration and reflection on the development of Chinese painting in the context of the new era—an exploration that also contributed to the modern transformation of Chinese painting.

The application of the "Baoshi cun" is an important contribution of Fu Baoshi to the techniques of Chinese landscape painting. This texturing method breaks through the limitations of traditional techniques, brings new possibilities to the expressive forms of landscape painting, and enriches the brush-and-ink language of Chinese painting.

Through the organic combination of elements such as ink wash, clouds and mist, mountains and waters, and human figures, the painting creates an ethereal, distant, and poetic artistic conception. This conception not only reflects the aesthetic pursuit of traditional Chinese landscape painting but also conforms to modern people’s yearning for nature and the spiritual world, thus possessing high artistic appeal.

In this work, Fu Baoshi fully demonstrated his unique artistic style, skillfully integrating traditional and modern, Eastern and Western artistic elements to form an artistic language with distinct personal characteristics—setting a new model for the development of Chinese landscape painting.

Promoting the Modern Transformation of Chinese Painting

Fu Baoshi’s artistic creation took place during a critical period when traditional Chinese painting was transitioning to modern painting. His exploration provided important practical experience for how Chinese painting could absorb the nutrients of modern art and achieve innovative development while preserving the essence of tradition. The innovative spirit and artistic concepts embodied in this landscape painting have exerted a profound influence on the creation of Chinese painting in later generations.

As an important carrier of traditional Chinese culture, Fu Baoshi’s landscape paintings not only have extensive influence in China but also spread the charm of Chinese culture internationally. His works have enabled more people to understand and recognize the unique artistic value of Chinese landscape painting, promoting cultural exchange and dialogue between China and the world.

This landscape painting by Fu Baoshi is a classic among his artistic creations, concentrating his artistic style, innovative spirit, and cultural connotations. From the exquisite composition and flexible brush-and-ink techniques to the creation of artistic conception and the expression of cultural spirit, it demonstrates an extremely high artistic standard. It is not only a testament to Fu Baoshi’s personal artistic achievements but also an important milestone in the history of Chinese landscape painting. By studying and appreciating this painting, we can gain a deeper understanding of Fu Baoshi’s contributions to the development of Chinese painting, as well as the profound cultural heritage and eternal artistic charm contained in Chinese landscape painting. In the contemporary era, this painting still holds important artistic and research value, providing valuable inspiration for our exploration of the future development of Chinese painting.
