In the galaxy of Chinese ceramic art,the official kiln wares of the Song Dynasty stand as a lofty bright moon, embodying the elegance of the dynasty and the ingenuity of craftsmen. This official kiln flower-mouthed brush washer is like the most warm and moist pool of clear waves beneath the moonlight, inviting viewers to open the door to millennium-old aesthetics.

This work is of a classic style from the official kilns of the Song Dynasty. The entire body is coated with sky-blue glaze, which is as uniform and pure as an autumn pond reflecting emerald, and as condensed and moist as dewdrops holding light. The vessel adopts a flower-mouthed shape, and the abdominal wall undulates with the mouth edge into beautiful arc ridges. The lines flow like the rhythm of court music, gaining both the delicacy of natural creatures and the regularity of imperial-made utensils, fully embodying the spiritual core of"gewuzhizhi"(investigating things to attain knowledge)in Song Dynasty aesthetics—pursuing the principles of heaven and earth and the ultimate of beauty in the use of utensils.

The mouth edge takes on a petal shape, with distinct edge lines yet no sharp harshness. The glaze slightly gathers and disperses at the edge, faintly hinting at the charm of a purple mouth. This is the marvel of the official kiln's"wrapped-foot branch burning"technique and the natural property of the glaze:under high temperature, the glaze liquid drips, and the glaze layer at the mouth edge is slightly thin, allowing the color of the body to quietly permeate. It is like a light purple silk dress gently covering a green hill, exhibiting layers in simplicity and ingenuity in conciseness. It is not only the key to identifying the Song Dynasty official kiln but also a marvel of aesthetic expression.

At the exposed body part of the vessel bottom, the characteristic of an"iron foot"is visible. The body is firm, with a dark brown hue, forming a visual rhythm of cold-warm contrast and light-shade interreflection with the sky-blue glaze surface. The center of the bottom is glazed, with scattered crackles like ice fissures,as fine as silk threads and as dense as stars. This state of"golden threads and iron lines"is not deliberately crafted but a natural charm resulting from the difference in expansion coefficients between the body and glaze. Each crackle is unique, like annual rings engraved by time on the porcelain body, witnessing the tranquility and vicissitudes of thousands of years, and further highlighting the philosophical realm of"flawed beauty"of the official kiln—the imperfect part is precisely the ultimate integration of heaven's creation and human craftsmanship.
