This set of keys is entirely made of brass, which was one of the mainstream materials for manufacturing daily-use metal utensils during the Republic of China Period. Brass boasts both excellent ductility and wear resistance—it is not only easy for craftsmen to carve and shape, but also maintains structural stability during long-term use. For tools like keys, which need to be frequently inserted into lock cylinders and bear twisting force, the physical properties of brass can be described as "tailor-made".
From a craftsmanship perspective, every key bears traces of manual forging and chiseling on its tooth shape and handle. Unlike the standardized stamped parts of modern industry, the tooth part of the key was polished and trimmed bit by bit by craftsmen based on their experience. Although the thickness and spacing of the teeth vary slightly, these differences are exactly the evidence of the "ingenuity of craftsmanship" in the era of manual work. Despite the simple shape of the handle, one can still see the hammer marks left during forging and the mottled copper rust formed by oxidation over the years. These traces, like a layer of "patina", are like a diary written by time on the material.
The way multiple keys are strung together with a metal ring also reflects the pragmatic design concept of the Republic of China Period. This design is convenient for carrying and allows centralized management of keys used to open different locks (such as cabinet locks, drawer locks, wooden box locks, and even some door locks). It not only prevents the keys from being scattered and lost, but also conforms to the usage scenarios of the time—where both "one key for multiple locks" and "one key for one lock" coexisted in families and shops.

During the Republic of China Period, lock types were diverse, ranging from traditional Chinese styles such as "Guang locks" and "Huaqi locks" to Western-influenced pin tumbler locks, forming a pluralistic lock-and-key system. The multi-tooth and irregular structure of this set of keys was specifically designed to fit different lock cylinders.
Each key has a unique tooth shape: some feature "concave" slots, some have protruding tenons, and others boast complex hook-like structures. These differences correspond to the varying "mechanisms" inside lock cylinders—some locks open and close via "tooth-slot engagement," while others control the bolt through "tenon-and-mortise alignment." For instance, one key with a long, narrow groove was likely designed for a "Guang lock" (commonly known as a "horizontal-opening lock"). Such locks were extremely prevalent in residential houses and shops during the Republic of China Period, and the linkage between the lock beam and cylinder relied entirely on the precise push of the key’s tooth slots.
Judging from the size and thickness of the keys, their usage scenarios were specialized. Longer and wider keys may have been used to open large wooden chests or shop cabinet locks, while smaller ones were adapted for drawers, jewelry boxes, and other small items. This detailed division of "one key for one purpose" not only reflects the abundance of public and private items in social life during the Republic of China Period but also demonstrates the importance people attached to property security.
The existence of this set of keys is a microcosmic reflection of various aspects of Republic of China society.
In terms of economic life, it bears witness to the vitality of industry and commerce at that time. Whether it was the keys to shop cabinets or household chests, they all imply the frequent circulation of goods and the accumulation of private property. Brass, as a relatively precious metal, was used to make civilian keys—this also indirectly indicates society’s investment in "lock-and-key culture" back then. Behind a single key lies people’s cherished regard for the fruits of labor and their commitment to upholding business reputation.
In cultural exchange, it is a product of the collision between Chinese and Western lock technologies. During the Republic of China Period, Western pin tumbler lock technology gradually spread to China, yet traditional locks did not completely disappear, creating a situation where "the old and the new coexisted." This set of keys not only retains the shape of Chinese lock keys inherited from the Ming and Qing dynasties but may also incorporate influences from Western lock cylinder structures (such as subtle designs in some tooth shapes). This "hybrid" state is precisely a material manifestation of the "spread of Western learning to the East" during the Republic of China Period.
In daily life, it is a "witness" to the life trajectories of ordinary people. Imagine an early morning in the Republic of China: a shopkeeper takes out this set of keys from his pocket, unlocks the cabinets one by one, and counts the goods; or a housewife uses them to open a wooden chest and take out clothes she sewed for her family. Every insertion and turn of the key freezes a moment of daily life. It carries the trivialities of daily necessities (firewood, rice, oil, and salt) and records the ups and downs of business transactions—serving as a concrete carrier of the "warmth of daily life" in that era.
From a collection perspective, this set of Republic of China keys holds multiple values.
Cultural Relic Value: It is a physical specimen of metal craftsmanship and lock technology from the Republic of China Period. Compared with written records, such artifacts present the craftsmanship standards of the time in a "visible" way—craftsmen’s manual skills and metal processing methods can all be studied by later generations through the details of the keys.
Historical Value: As a "micro-fossil" of social life in the Republic of China, it can be cross-referenced with other cultural relics (such as locks, wooden chests, and shop account books from the same period), helping researchers reconstruct a more authentic daily life of that era. For example, the shape of the keys can be used to infer the style of matching locks, and further analyze the security concepts and technical standards of the time.
Cultural Value: It carries the continuation and evolution of China’s traditional "lock-and-key culture." A "lock" symbolizes protection, and a "key" represents opening. During the Republic of China Period, this cultural imagery not only retained the practical meaning of "securing against theft" but also implied people’s spiritual aspirations for "peace and smoothness." Every brass mark on these keys is a material footnote to this culture.
When we gaze at this set of brass keys, we see not just a few metal utensils, but a tangible piece of Republic of China history. Their material and craftsmanship tell the story of the industrial and artisanal landscape of that era; their shape and function reflect the lock-and-key technology and daily scenarios of the time; their existence and preservation carry the economic pulse, cultural integration, and daily warmth of Republic of China society.
Today, when modern locks have long become electronic and intelligent, this set of Republic of China keys is more like a "time capsule" from the past. It reminds us that every old object is a fragment of history. When we piece these fragments together, we can outline the silhouette of an era and hear the echoes of life a century ago—the soft click of a key entering a lock, and the heartbeat of a bygone time.
