In 1925, China was at the end of the rule of the Beiyang warlords, with social unrest and impoverished livelihoods, yet the Beijing art scene was experiencing a golden period of collision between old and new artistic forms. At this time, Qi Baishi had completed the crucial stage of his 'Late-Life Reform.' At 59 years old, Qi Baishi was in the prime of his artistic creation: on one hand, he had firmly established himself in the Beijing art world, overcoming the difficulties of his early years far from home, and his artistic style was widely recognized by both the market and academia; on the other hand, his longing for his hometown, Xiangtan in Hunan, was becoming increasingly intense. This series of twelve landscape screens is precisely the product of his deep integration of 'memories of his hometown' and 'artistic reform.' The works are not direct renderings of real scenes, but reconstructions of the 'ideal landscapes' in Qi Baishi's mind, with each piece carrying his affection for his hometown, his love for nature, and his relentless pursuit of artistic innovation.

The "Twelve Landscape Panels" is the only systematically created grand landscape series in Qi Baishi's artistic career. Created in 1925, it represents the pinnacle of Qi Baishi's work at the age of 59 and is also one of the most significant landscape works in the history of modern Chinese art. This series consists of 12 independent vertical landscape scrolls, each measuring 180 cm in height and 47 cm in width, with an overall height of nearly 2 meters and a total length exceeding 5.6 meters. With its majestic and expansive composition, unique brushwork, and sincere, intense emotions, it thoroughly breaks the formal constraints of traditional literati landscapes and inaugurates a wholly new paradigm known as the 'Qi School Landscape.'

The twelve paintings of "Twelve Screens of Mountains and Waters" are respectively titled "Riverside Homes," "Twin Shadows on the Rocky Cliff," "A Lone Sail on the Plank Bridge," "Towering Cypresses," "Distant Banks at Sunset," "Pine Trees and a White House," "Apricot Blossom Cottage," "Deep Mist and Sail Shadows," "Spring Mountains and Green Trees," "Frogs Croaking for Ten Miles," "Night Snow on the Terrace," and "Distant Sails by the Stream Bridge" (titles may vary slightly in different editions, but the core compositions are consistent). Each painting stands independently as a complete work, yet together they form a unified style in brushwork, artistic conception, and theme, collectively presenting a comprehensive panorama of Qi Baishi's landscape world.

Qi Baishi, with his 'Twelve Landscapes Screen,' completely broke the rigid conventions of literati landscape painting since the Ming and Qing dynasties, created a completely new paradigm of 'Qi School Landscape,' and pointed the way for the development of modern and contemporary landscape painting:

Breaking the tradition of copying the ancients: He shifted landscape painting from 'imitating the ancients' to 'innovation,' from 'the mountains of the ancients' to 'one's own mountains,' laying the foundation for personalized creation in modern and contemporary landscape painting.

Integrating refined and popular aesthetics: He achieved the artistic pursuit of 'enjoyable by both refined and popular tastes,' transforming landscape painting from an elite art of literati to a national art accessible to the masses, expanding the audience of landscape painting.

Expanding the boundaries of brush and ink: He incorporated the spirit of inscriptions and carvings, folk art, and aesthetic use of color into the brushwork of landscape painting, expanding its technical boundaries and providing future landscape painters with entirely new creative ideas.
