In the history of modern Chinese machine-made silver coins, the Beiyang-made Guangxu Yuanbao stands out as one of the most representative and collectible categories. The 34th year of Guangxu reign version of seven mace and two candareens coin, as the final issue of the Beiyang series, carries significant historical information of late Qing currency reform and witnesses the rise and fall of the Beiyang Machinery Bureau coinage system. The minting of Beiyang silver coins began in the 15th year of Guangxu reign, undergoing more than twenty years of technical evolution from early hand-made coins to later standardized machine production, each version reflecting changes in currency policy and industrial standards of the time. The 34th year of Guangxu was a period of political turmoil in the late Qing Dynasty, when the Beiyang Silver Dollar Bureau produced its last batch of dragon coins amid internal and external crises, making this coin a representative variety in terms of surviving quantity and circulation in the Beiyang series. Its design, minting craftsmanship and historical background collectively form a microcosm of late Qing machine-made coin culture.

The obverse of this 34th year Beiyang-made Guangxu Yuanbao features four regular-script characters “Guangxu Yuanbao” within the central bead circle, with the Manchu characters “Bao Jin” in the center indicating its origin from the Beiyang Silver Dollar Bureau. Above the bead circle are the characters “Made in Beiyang”, while below is inscribed the denomination “seven Mace and two Candareens”, flanked by dot asterisks on both sides. The characters are neatly carved with clear and powerful strokes, reflecting the rigorous style of late Qing official coinage. The reverse center depicts the iconic Qing Dynasty dragon pattern: the dragon coils vigorously with finely defined scales, its head held high with bright eyes, flowing whiskers and powerful claws, complemented by water wave patterns below for a full and grand composition. The bead circle is surrounded by English inscriptions “34TH YEAR OF KUANG HSU” and “PEI YANG”, marking the minting year and institution. The combination of Chinese and Western text reflects the era's characteristic of Western influence and modernization transformation in late Qing currency system. The coin features standard straight reeded edges with uniform depth and spacing, demonstrating mature mechanical minting technology of the Beiyang Mint at that time.

As the final issue of the Beiyang series, the 34th year version holds significant research value in minting craftsmanship and variety characteristics. Due to the chaotic currency system in the late Qing Dynasty, the Beiyang Silver Dollar Bureau adjusted minting dies multiple times, leading to various subtypes of the 34th year edition. The common long-tailed dragon variety is the most prevalent, which this coin belongs to, with its stretched and elongated dragon tail and clear full scales. The coin surface shows natural wear from circulation with rounded edges of characters and patterns, covered with smooth and aged patina. The light grey patina formed by silver oxidation evenly covers the surface without artificial aging traces, representing the historical mark of the old silver coin's century-long circulation. The overall weight and dimensions comply with the standard of seven mace and two candareens coins of the time, with pure silver quality and clear, crisp sound when tapped, reflecting the high minting quality of the late Qing Beiyang Mint.

From the perspective of historical and cultural value, the Beiyang-made Guangxu Yuanbao silver coin is not only a physical witness to the late Qing currency system but also a microcosm of modern Chinese social transformation. In the late Qing Dynasty, amid foreign aggression and domestic calls for currency reform, traditional silver tael system coexisted with Western silver dollars. The establishment of the Beiyang Silver Dollar Bureau aimed to address this situation and promote currency modernization. Minted in the special historical year when both Emperor Guangxu and Empress Dowager Cixi passed away, this 34th year coin became the swan song of Qing Dynasty official dragon coins, as Emperor Xuantong ascended the throne the following year marking the end of Qing rule. Today, the Beiyang-made Guangxu Yuanbao has become a popular category in coin collecting, especially well-preserved 34th year coins with natural patina, which hold multiple values of historical research, cultural inheritance and collection investment. It carries the historical memory of late Qing currency reform and witnesses the critical transition from traditional silver tael system to modern monetary system in China, serving as precious physical material for studying late Qing economy, politics and society, and an indispensable part of modern Chinese coin culture.
