Premium Recommendation —Bezoar Suis (Pig Gallstone)

Within the collection system of precious traditional Chinese animal medicinal materials, Calculus Bovis (cow bezoar), Canine Bezoar (dog gallstone) and Suis Bezoar (pig gallstone) are collectively known as the Three Treasures. All are naturally formed concretionary calculi inside animal bodies. Boasting an extremely low formation rate, outstanding medicinal efficacy and scarce surviving stockpiles, they have ranked among the top-tier rare Chinese medicinal herbs for thousands of years. Compared with Calculus Bovis, which is relatively accessible on the market, Suis Bezoar (pig gallstone, scientific name: Bezoar Suis) forms under far harsher conditions. Intact natural specimens with original fleshy stalks are exceedingly rare rarities, highly coveted yet seldom obtainable among medicinal collectible circles. We hereby present this fully intact original Suis Bezoar specimen, featuring a neat and plump shape, intact epidermal texture and well-preserved original stalk. With premium condition, it possesses authentic medicinal value, profound materia medica cultural heritage and steady appreciation potential for collection.
Medically formally termed Porcine Calculus, Suis Bezoar is an organic calculus developed inside the gallbladder, bile ducts and digestive tracts of pigs. It forms through years of calcification and coagulation of bile, bodily secretions, keratinous tissues and minerals resulting from long-term metabolic stasis. As a rare physiological anomaly, it can never be artificially cultivated or replicated. Qualified Suis Bezoar requires multiple stringent formation prerequisites simultaneously: first, the live pig must suffer from chronic long-term biliary metabolic disorder accompanied by bile stagnation and precipitation; second, it takes years or even more than a decade of gradual layered coagulation to take full shape. Statistically, only one Suis Bezoar may occur by chance among tens of thousands of live pigs, with the odds of complete formation lower than one in ten thousand. Top-grade specimens retaining intact original stalks are exceptionally scarce. Commercially slaughtered domestic pigs feature short growth cycles and stable metabolism, making Suis Bezoar formation virtually impossible. Only elderly pigs with lengthy lifespans and unique physical constitutions stand an infinitesimal chance of developing such calculi. Most discovered Suis Bezoars are tiny, loose-textured and malformed. A naturally intact specimen complete with body flesh and stalk such as the presented piece can hardly be encountered for decades among folk collections. Its formation relies entirely on natural serendipity, inherently endowing Suis Bezoar with rare intrinsic value.
Displayed from front and reverse perspectives, this specimen is a fully formed original stalk-attached Suis Bezoar. It takes on a standard spindle-pear shape with a plump enlarged main body, while one end retains the complete original fleshy stalk—the core identifying marker for authentic natural specimens and the crowning feature of this collectible.
Epidermal Details of the Main Body
The exterior skin exhibits a rich dark brown matte finish, covered in naturally uneven wrinkles and undulating textures with irregular density. These grain patterns form naturally from years of internal substance shrinkage and coagulation, with fine natural fibrous filaments attached to the surface as primitive formative marks. No signs of artificial polishing, dyeing or reshaping are detectable. The crust is thick, compact and solid with a substantial weight, thoroughly air-dried for stable preservation against cracking or deterioration, qualifying it as high-grade fully mature aged material. The epidermal wrinkles feature natural depth with soft undulating transitions, free from rigid patterned textures caused by mould pressing, perfectly showcasing the organic random texture exclusive to naturally coagulated calculi.
Characteristics of the Original Fleshy Stalk
One terminal end of the specimen preserves the complete native fleshy stalk, organically connected to the main body via fascia and muscular fibres in light tan-brown hues with distinctly visible fibrous veins and seamless natural structural integration. The fleshy stalk represents the original connecting section between the bezoar and the porcine bile duct. Only genuine specimens formed naturally within living pigs come with complete stalks, whose native fleshy texture cannot be duplicated by counterfeits, serving as the most intuitive criterion to distinguish authentic natural Suis Bezoar from artificial imitations. The impeccable preservation of the full stalk also testifies to meticulous handling throughout extraction, cleaning and air-drying procedures, resulting in an exceptional state of conservation. The entire specimen boasts a sleek, well-proportioned silhouette free from damage, breakage, repair or adhesive mending, with thorough desiccation and an elegant stately form. It ranks within the top tier of condition among equivalent Suis Bezoar collectibles.

Records of the medicinal application of Suis Bezoar can be traced back to materia medica classics compiled through the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has long been ranked as a rare premium Chinese medicinal herb on par with Calculus Bovis (cow bezoar). Characterized as bitter and cool in nature and flavour under traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, it delivers classic therapeutic effects including clearing heat to resolve phlegm, calming fright to soothe the spirit, and counteracting toxins to reduce swelling. In ancient times, it was exclusively reserved for imperial courts and wealthy households as standby medicinal material, rarely accessible to ordinary civilians.
TCM classics document that Suis Bezoar acts on the Heart and Liver meridians, possessing unique curative effects for conditions such as infantile convulsions and mania, high fever accompanied by restlessness, as well as abscesses, sores and toxic swellings. Its core pharmacologically active constituents comprise bilirubin, cholic acid, amino acids, and a variety of bioactive trace elements. Fully mature Suis Bezoar specimens formed over longer periods contain higher concentrations of active ingredients, corresponding to superior medicinal potency.
Unlike mass-produced common Chinese medicinal herbs, Suis Bezoar forms purely by natural chance and cannot be manufactured on a large scale. Its output has remained scarce since ancient times, frequently commanding high prices yet remaining unavailable for purchase at ancient apothecaries. To this day, it retains extremely high pharmacological research value within modern TCM research. As an irreplaceable rare raw material in the TCM system, it carries profound materia medica heritage, embodying thousands of years of wisdom from traditional herbal medicine.
Within China’s domestic medicinal collectibles market, a certain volume of Calculus Bovis and Canine Bezoar remains in circulation, whereas intact high-grade Suis Bezoar exists in extremely limited quantities, making it the scarcest variety among the Three Animal Treasures. First and foremost, its formation probability is exceedingly low. It is commonly said that merely one Suis Bezoar can emerge among ten thousand pigs. Despite the enormous annual volume of domestic pig slaughter nationwide, only a tiny number of qualified fully formed Suis Bezoar can be screened yearly, with top-grade specimens complete with original fleshy stalks extremely few in number, resulting in severe constraints on raw material supply from the source.
Secondly, intact finished specimens are notoriously difficult to preserve. After extraction, Suis Bezoar requires prolonged slow shade and air drying. Improper handling readily leads to cracking, mildew and rot. The stock of vintage well-preserved specimens has continued to dwindle over time. Most high-quality pieces produced in earlier years are permanently housed in collections of traditional Chinese medicine hospitals and scientific research institutions, or held in private permanent collections by veteran collectors, leaving very few premium specimens available for civilian market circulation.
Thirdly, rampant counterfeits on the market raise the threshold for authentic identification. The current market is flooded with fake Suis Bezoar fabricated from synthetic resin, animal offal and artificial dyeing. Though counterfeits can mimic outward shape, they cannot replicate natural epidermal texture or original fleshy stalk structure, posing identification challenges for amateur enthusiasts and further accentuating the rarity of complete genuine natural specimens.
A top-grade natural Suis Bezoar far transcends its basic medicinal property, integrating three core values: practical medicinal utility, cultural research significance, and asset value retention. It serves as a niche premium collectible that balances practical function and collection value.
