Among the vast and extensive collection systems of ancient coins throughout history, the Northern Song Dynasty's Da Guan Tong Bao Zhe Shi (folded ten coin) has always been an irreplaceable benchmark collectible. It is not merely an ordinary circulating copper coin, but a tangible carrier of the triple pinnacle achievements of the Northern Song Emperor Huizong's reign in economics, calligraphy, and casting craftsmanship. It is widely recognized within the ancient coin collecting community as the "King of Song Coins." This particular Da Guan Tong Bao Zhe Shi, graded and encapsulated by Baoli, earning a high grade of 85 in beauty, has completely preserved the coin's original characteristics. The capsule clearly indicates the Song Dynasty period, folded ten type, dimensions and weight, a unique collectible code, and a source-tracing QR code. The authoritative certification eliminates the risk of counterfeit, and long-term encapsulation prevents oxidation and deterioration. Whether for coin topic collectors, calligraphy enthusiasts, or those fond of Song Dynasty literature and history, this collectible embodies multiple core values of appreciation, research, and preservation. This coin was produced during the Da Guan era of the Northern Song Dynasty, with the inscription personally written by Emperor Huizong Zhao Ji. It was meticulously cast at the national-level official mint and circulated in the prosperous markets of Northern Song cities. After nearly a thousand years of sedimentation and history, it is now perfectly preserved in a graded protective case. Viewing it reveals the mottled ancient bronze and the sharpness of slender gold script, allowing one to touch the bustling splendor of Bianjing a thousand years ago and understand the genius calligraphy unique to Emperor Huizong as well as the ultimate aesthetics of the Great Song Dynasty.

“Daguan” is derived from the Book of Changes (I Ching): “A grand view from above, following and yielding, observing the world with balance and righteousness.” It was the era name of Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty, embodying the emperor’s noble wish to oversee the realm and ensure peace throughout the land. Emperor Huizong himself was a rare artistic monarch in Chinese history. Although his governance had its shortcomings, he possessed unparalleled talent in painting, calligraphy, epigraphy, and craftsmanship. He invented the unique Slender Gold style of calligraphy, which is vigorous, elegant, and refined, sweeping away the rounded and solid styles of inscriptions on previous coins. By engraving imperial calligraphy directly onto coins, he introduced an unprecedented innovation in the history of coinage.

The Daguan Tongbao Zhe Shi, as a large-denomination official coin, strictly follows the Northern Song dynasty's stringent central minting standards in terms of shape, size, weight, and copper alloy composition. This graded coin has been measured with a diameter of 41.8 mm, a thickness of 2.4 mm, and a net weight of 21.8 grams. Its substantial size and weight are immediately noticeable, reflecting the solid material standards of Northern Song official coins, which are vastly different from the thin, privately cast small coins. The coin adheres to the traditional ancient coin design of a round heaven and square earth, featuring a well-proportioned and broad outer contour, clearly raised inner and outer rims, a square and neatly cut central hole, and smooth, burr-free edges. This fully demonstrates the mature sand casting coin craftsmanship of the Song dynasty.
The coin casting technology of the Song dynasty underwent several centuries of iteration, reaching its peak during Emperor Huizong's reign. The entire process was divided into four major steps: copper alloy smelting, mother coin engraving, sand mold casting, and edge polishing, with each step carefully supervised by specialized personnel. During smelting, high-purity bronze was selected, with a balanced copper-to-tin ratio, resulting in coins that are dense and resistant to brittleness and corrosion. The core process was the engraving of the mother coin, where court master engravers meticulously reproduced Huizong's slender-style calligraphy, ensuring uniformity in the contours, and depth of the characters on each coin. After casting, artisans individually polished the edges and the central hole, ensuring smooth circulation without harming the hands. This highly standardized production system was nothing short of a marvel in ancient handicraft.
The obverse and reverse surfaces of this coin are flat and solid, with no evident pits or incomplete casting. The outer rim is intact, with no dents, cracks, repairs, or warping. Despite nearly a thousand years of circulation and burial, it maintains the original shape of an official large-denomination coin, which is the main reason Bao Li Grading awarded it a high grade of MS 85. As the largest denomination of the Daguan series, the Zhe Shi was produced in significantly fewer quantities than small coins like the Xiao Ping, Zhe Er, or Zhe Wu. It was originally minted for high-value transactions, so survival in private hands was always rare, and a complete, high-graded specimen is extraordinarily scarce, far more valuable to collectors than ordinary Xiao Guan Tongbao coins.
