English Translation

In the 31st year of the Guangxu reign (1905), Xiliang, Governor-General of Yunnan and Guizhou, submitted a memorial petitioning the imperial court to establish the Yunnan Silver Mint. The mint was sited at the former premises of the Baoyun Bureau in Kunming. Machinery for coin production was ordered from Schuler AG of Germany, and German craftsmen were commissioned to engrave coin dies. Construction of the Yunnan Silver Mint was completed and production commenced in the 33rd year of the Guangxu reign (1907); the institution was later renamed the Yunnan Branch Mint under the Board of Revenue.

The mint first produced trial strikes (commonly known as copper patterns) using brass and other copper alloys. These trial specimens were never released for public circulation. Only a tiny quantity was cast, and most were destroyed after striking, rendering surviving examples extremely rare and precious.

Within the bead ring lies the Chinese characters Guangxu Yuanbao, with Manchu script at the centre. Along the upper rim of the bead ring are regular script characters reading Made in Yunnan Province, and the coin denomination is inscribed along the lower rim. Four-petaled floral stars decorate the left and right flanks.

The dragon motif is fully enclosed within the bead ring. Its coiled body appears confined by the string of beads, hence the popular moniker "Trapped Dragon". Numismatic scholars adopt the formal nomenclature: "Coiled Dragon".

Standard denominations include Seven Mace and Two Candareens, and Three Mace and Six Candareens. Specimens of the Three Mace and Six Candareens denomination are exceptionally scarce.
