In the developmental pedigree of ancient Chinese bronze ritual vessels, this bronze drum made in the Xianfeng reign of the Great Qing Dynasty is a classic work that embodies Qing Dynasty bronze craftsmanship, southwest ethnic culture and ritual-music system. Made of bronze, shaped as a drum, and infused with sun patterns and frog ornaments as its soul, it integrates the functional attribute of ancient Chinese bronze drums as "a combination of ritual vessels and musical instruments", the craftsmanship pursuit of "imitating ancient traditions to make rituals" in the Qing Dynasty, and the totem belief of the Baiyue culture in southwest China. Between the thick bronze body and intricate patterns, it conveys the cultural logic of "carrying rituals with drums, passing souls with patterns", serving as both a representative relic of antique bronze drums in the Qing Dynasty and a vivid footnote to the "integration and coexistence of the Central Plains ritual system and southwest cultural context" in Chinese bronze culture.

From the perspective of shape and pattern, this bronze drum fully demonstrates the characteristics of Qing Dynasty antique ritual vessels: "inheriting the ancient, integrating the modern, with elaborate patterns". The bronze drum adopts a standard integrated shape of Wanjiaba type and Shizhaishan type, with a waisted and tightened drum body, steady and dignified lines, a wide and flat drum surface with regular radian, and symmetrical ring-shaped ears on both sides. These ears not only facilitate handling and display, but also meet the symmetrical and standardized requirements of ritual vessels. The overall shape combines the primitive shape of ancient southwest bronze drums with the dignified bearing of official ritual vessels of the Qing Dynasty. Three-dimensional squatting frogs are molded on the edge of the drum surface, evenly arranged counterclockwise. The frogs have a primitive shape, realistic expressions, and a vivid look of holding their heads high, which is the core embodiment of the frog totem worship of southwest ethnic groups. In the center of the drum surface is a twelve-rayed sun pattern, with powerful and symmetrical rays, surrounded by multiple concentric circular decorative belts, which are finely decorated with cloud and thunder patterns, geometric patterns, featherman patterns and egret patterns in turn. The patterns are arranged with proper density and clear layers. The drum body is decorated with multiple layers of return patterns, triangle patterns and water ripple patterns, progressing from top to bottom in a regular and orderly manner. It not only completely inherits the cultural traditions of sun worship, frog totem and natural belief of ancient southwest bronze drums, but also deeply integrates the technological characteristics of Qing Dynasty bronze ritual vessels, such as symmetry, rigorous patterns and solemn implication. It is a direct embodiment of the in-depth integration of the traditional Central Plains ritual culture and southwest ethnic culture. Every engraving of patterns, shaping of frogs and polishing of lines condenses the accurate reproduction and artistic re-creation of ancient bronze drum culture by Qing Dynasty craftsmen, becoming a core material link for analyzing the integration of Qing Dynasty bronze casting technology and southwest ethnic culture.

In terms of material and craftsmanship, this bronze drum embodies the creative pursuit of "taking bronze as the bone, frog patterns as the soul, and ritual system as the charm". It is made of standard high-tin bronze in the Qing Dynasty, with exquisite material ratio, thick and solid texture, and steady weight. The color is simple, gloomy, warm and restrained. After years of precipitation, it has thick and uniform handed-down patina and natural oxidation rust locally, with stable rust color and mellow patina. It fully shows the timeless beauty of ancient bronze ritual vessels, which is ancient, thick and experienced vicissitudes. It is a typical material selection for antique bronze ritual vessels in the Qing Dynasty, and also confirms its high-end positioning as an officially-made ritual vessel. In terms of craftsmanship, it integrates a variety of traditional bronze casting techniques such as mold casting, relief carving, round carving and line carving. It is integrally cast by lost-wax method, ensuring that the body is complete without splicing and the shape is regular without deviation; the squatting frogs on the drum surface are shaped by three-dimensional round carving technology, with smooth lines, vivid texture and lifelike expression; various patterns on the drum body and surface are carved by bas-relief and fine line carving, with smooth lines, natural transitions, clear and detailed patterns and distinct layers. Every pattern is exquisitely carved without roughness, perfectly reflecting the peak level of bronze casting technology in the middle and late Qing Dynasty. What is particularly exquisite is that bronze drums have been the important power and ritual vessels of southwest ethnic minorities since ancient times, symbolizing tribal power, wealth accumulation and sacrifice authority, and carrying the beliefs and cultural roots of southwest ethnic groups. The official casting of this drum during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty not only reflects the Qing court's respect and tolerance for southwest ethnic culture, but also highlights the political concept of multi-ethnic cultural integration and national unity, breaking the barrier between the Central Plains ritual system and southwest ethnic culture, making this bronze drum have both ritual dignity, technological value and ethnic cultural connotation.

From the perspective of historical value and cultural significance, this bronze drum made in the Xianfeng reign of the Great Qing Dynasty is a core witness to the integration of multi-ethnic culture and the inheritance and innovation of bronze ritual vessels in the Qing Dynasty. During the Xianfeng period, facing internal and external troubles, the Qing court still adhered to the concept of imitating ancient rituals and compatible ethnic cultures to cast such bronze drums. It not only continued the thousands of years of casting tradition of Chinese bronze ritual vessels, but also inherited the thousands of years of bronze drum culture of southwest ethnic minorities, serving as a physical evidence of cultural exchanges, mutual learning and blood connection of all ethnic groups in China. In the field of contemporary collection and cultural research, it is not only a bronze ritual vessel, but also a precious physical specimen for studying the ethnic policy, southwest ethnic culture and bronze craftsmanship of the Qing Dynasty, and its value far exceeds the vessel itself. The whole bronze drum integrates primitive shape, exquisite craftsmanship, ethnic totem and ritual connotation, carrying profound historical heritage and cultural genes. It still exudes ancient bronze charm and humanistic light in the passage of time, making it a treasure among Qing Dynasty bronze ritual vessels and a precious relic of the integration of Chinese multi-ethnic cultures.
