The Zhengde Tongbao coin with Eight Trigrams on the reverse is commonly known as a charm coin, distinct from ordinary folk tokens. It is widely believed among the public to regulate feng shui and ward off evil spirits.

Minted during the Zhengde reign of the Ming Dynasty (1506–1521), it is closely tied to folk beliefs of that era. Folklore held that Zhengde coins could suppress floods and avert disasters. The Eight Trigrams on the obverse embodies the philosophical tenet from The I Ching: "From the Supreme Ultimate came the Two Modes; from the Two Modes came the Four Symbols; from the Four Symbols came the Eight Trigrams." Symbolizing heaven, earth, water, fire, thunder, wind, mountain and marsh, the Eight Trigrams reflect people’s pursuit of good fortune and disaster avoidance.

Such coins are rarely extant, and fine specimens are particularly valuable. Made of bronze (an alloy of copper, tin and lead), it conforms to the material characteristics of copper coins in the Ming Dynasty.
