Compared to meticulously cut and set finished pieces, emerald rough more vividly reveals the gemstone’s original character, crystalline features and geological secrets; it serves as the cornerstone of gemstone identification and is a rare treasure in the fields of high-end collecting and mineral specimens.

Emerald is essentially a green beryl containing chromium and vanadium; its chemical composition is beryllium aluminium silicate. Its colour is derived from trace elements of chromium (Cr³⁺) and vanadium (V³⁺), resulting in a rich spectrum of hues ranging from pale green and emerald green to deep green and blue-tinged green. Emeralds in their rough state retain the most complete crystal forms, growth patterns, inclusions and fissures; they serve as primary source material for studying their origin, provenance and quality, and represent the gemstone’s most authentic form as it transitions from the mine to the jewellery display.

祖母绿主要形成于岩浆期后热液活动与区域变质作用环境中，通常赋存于：超镁铁质岩、片岩、云母片岩、绿泥片岩等变质岩中；花岗岩、伟晶岩与围岩接触带的热液裂隙、孔洞、晶洞之中。形成必须满足：富含铍（Be）、铝（Al）、硅（Si）等基础元素；存在致色元素铬（Cr）或钒（V）；温度、压力适中，热液活动缓慢且稳定，允许晶体缓慢生长；地质环境长期稳定，避免强烈构造运动破坏晶体。这种多重条件叠加，使得祖母绿难以大规模形成，且完美晶体极其罕见。

祖母绿属于六方晶系，原石最典型的形态为：六方柱状晶体：常见长柱状、短柱状，横截面呈正六边形；晶体两端可见六方锥状端面，但完整双端晶形较少；柱面常发育平行于 C 轴的纵纹（生长纹），部分可见横向生长环带。优质原石晶体完整、棱角清晰、柱面平整；劣质或受地质破坏者则呈碎块状、粒状、不规则状。

通过物理参数，可快速识别祖母绿原石：颜色：以绿色为主，由浅黄绿、翠绿、深绿到蓝绿色，纯正浓郁的中深绿色、带微蓝调的翠绿价值最高；光泽：原石多为玻璃光泽，断口处为油脂光泽；透明度：从透明、半透明到不透明，高品质原石通透度高；硬度：莫氏硬度 7.5～8，高于石英，低于红蓝宝石；密度：约 2.67～2.78 g/cm³，手感有一定分量；解理：一组不完全解理，脆性较大，受外力易沿结构裂开；折射率：1.56～1.60，双折射明显。

祖母绿最大的特点是脆性大、多裂、多包裹体，行内常说 “无裂不祖母绿，无棉不祖母绿”，原石状态下这一特征尤为明显。

Emeralds are primarily formed in environments characterised by post-magmatic hydrothermal activity and regional metamorphism, and are typically found in metamorphic rocks such as ultramafic rocks, schists, mica schists and chlorite schists; hydrothermal fractures, cavities and voids at the contact zones between granites, pegmatites and host rocks. Formation requires the following conditions: a high concentration of base elements such as beryllium (Be), aluminium (Al) and silicon (Si); the presence of colour-giving elements such as chromium (Cr) or vanadium (V); moderate temperature and pressure, with slow and stable hydrothermal activity allowing for the gradual growth of crystals; the geological environment must remain stable over the long term to prevent intense tectonic movements from destroying the crystals. The combination of these multiple conditions makes it difficult for emeralds to form on a large scale, and perfect crystals are extremely rare.

Emerald belongs to the hexagonal crystal system, and the most typical form of the rough stone is a hexagonal prismatic crystal: commonly seen as long or short prisms, with a cross-section forming a regular hexagon; hexagonal conical faces are visible at both ends of the crystal, though complete double-terminated crystals are rare; the prism faces often develop longitudinal striations (growth lines) parallel to the C-axis, and some may exhibit transverse growth bands. High-quality rough stones feature intact crystals with sharp edges and flat prism faces; inferior specimens or those damaged by geological processes appear in fragments, grains or irregular shapes.

Emerald rough stones can be quickly identified by their physical characteristics: Colour: predominantly green, ranging from pale yellow-green, emerald green and deep green to blue-green; the most valuable are those with a pure, rich medium-to-deep green or an emerald green with a slight blue undertone; Lustre: Rough stones typically exhibit a vitreous lustre, whilst the fracture surface displays an oily lustre; Transparency: Ranging from transparent, translucent to opaque, with high-quality rough stones exhibiting high translucency; Hardness: Mohs hardness 7.5–8, higher than quartz but lower than ruby and sapphire; Density: Approximately 2.67–2.78 g/cm³, with a certain weight to the touch; Cleavage: One set of imperfect cleavage; the stone is relatively brittle and prone to fracturing along its structural planes when subjected to external force; Refractive index: 1.56–1.60, with pronounced double refraction.

The most distinctive characteristics of emeralds are their high brittleness, prevalence of fractures and inclusions; as the trade adage goes, ‘No emerald is without a crack, no emerald is without a cloud’, and these features are particularly evident in rough stones.
