Kaiyuan Tongbao: A single coin carries the grandeur of a thousand years of the Tang Dynasty, and ancient coins engrave the splendor of a prosperous era.

In the long river of ancient Chinese currency, no copper coin can encapsulate the rise and fall of a dynasty as completely as the Kaiyuan Tongbao. It was born in the fourth year of Wude under Emperor Gaozu of Tang, decisively ending the near thousand-year-long system of Wu Zhu coins and initiating a monetary system that circulated for over a millennium. It served as the core circulating currency throughout the more than three hundred years of the Tang Dynasty.

This enduring Kaiyuan Tongbao, after being buried underground for a thousand years, bears vibrant layers of red and green patina, with its inscriptions clear and orderly, and its form standard and correct, representing an authentic official coin of early Tang. Within this small bronze coin lies the prosperity of the Zhenguan era, the splendor of the Kaiyuan period, the unique calligraphic aesthetics and minting craft of the Tang people, and even the economic currents spanning the medieval period.

A small round coin with a square hole is not only a token of daily commerce but also a historical artifact witnessing the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty. Moreover, it is an irreplaceable classic entry-level treasure in coin collecting.

This Kaiyuan Tongbao coin inherits the traditional shape of the ancient spring with round heaven and square ground, square on the outside and square inside, with a clean and regular contour, moderate thickness of the coin's body, and neat square piercing. It is the standard form for official coins of the Tang dynasty. In ancient times, coins were cast using mother coins by rolling sand, with strict control by the bureau. Each coin had standardized diameter, weight, and inscription layout, fully reflecting the rigorous handicraft standards of the Tang Dynasty government.

The most moving aspect lies in the calligraphy of the coins. The four characters 'Kaiyuan Tongbao' were personally inscribed by the early Tang calligrapher Ouyang Xun, making them one of the very few ancient coins in history to have coins personally inscribed by a top literati. The script is in eight-part clerical script, incorporating the brushwork of regular script, with a vigorous and dignified style. The four characters Kai, Yuan, Tong, and Bao are arranged evenly and evenly, with strokes of proper thickness and sharp transitions, without a trace of affectation.

The "Kai" character has a wide door frame, creating a relaxed atmosphere; The first stroke of the character "元" is short and smooth, exuding elegance; The character "通" (通) flows smoothly and gracefully at the bottom; The character "宝" (treasure) is steady and steady, with the shell radical being neat. The four characters are arranged in a square and surrounded by a balanced spacing and density, with strict rules for each character, fully showcasing the unique charm of early Tang regular script and clerical script fusion. Countless coins and inscriptions in later generations all used Kaiyuan Tongbao as the model for calligraphy. These small copper coins contain the brushwork of a master calligrapher of a generation, making them tangible Tang dynasty calligraphy artifacts that can be appreciated in hand.

The shape of 'round heaven and square earth' is a concrete expression of Chinese philosophy. The outer circle symbolizes the cycle of heaven, while the inner part represents human rituals and laws. Ancient people carried and stored Kaiyuan Tongbao at home, both for trade and to express wishes for harmony between heaven and humanity, peace, and smooth progress. Coins have long been more than just a medium of exchange, but objects carrying traditional philosophy and folk culture.

The Kaiyuan Tongbao coin before us is most captivating for the naturally formed millennia-old patina covering its surface. Buried deep in the soil for over a thousand years, the copper gradually underwent chemical reactions with minerals and moisture in the earth, layer upon layer creating a rich and vibrant rust: intense stone-blue patina spreads across the coin, interspersed with vermilion-red rust and earthy yellow-brown rust. The three colors intertwine and merge, with varied depths and textures, a testament to nature's slow process—devoid of any artificial acid washing or dyeing, retaining the original beauty developed underground over centuries.

Collectors of ancient coins have long favored such naturally patinated specimens. The blue patina is formed by copper carbonate, while the red rust comes from iron-rich soil, and the mottled texture adheres firmly to the copper substrate, creating a warm and substantial feel that does not easily flake off. The rust does not obscure the inscriptions; the four-character script remains clearly legible, with the coin’s outline intact, free from cracks, missing edges, or severe wear, making its condition above average among Tang dynasty coins preserved to this day.

Every inch of rust carries the imprint of centuries. This coin was once buried in the soil of the prosperous Tang market, witnessed the lights of the Chang’an night market, heard the camel bells of Silk Road traders, and endured dynastic changes and geographical shifts. After lying quietly underground for over a millennium, it has now resurfaced, with its vibrant patina serving as a unique mark of time. New collectors can appreciate the coin's historical passage through the colors of its rust, while seasoned collectors particularly favor such untouched, original coins. The naturally formed patina is an irreplaceable outer layer, a testament to the coin's authenticity that cannot be replicated.
