In the long river of Oriental arts and crafts, Ming Dynasty bronzes have become a brilliant chapter in the history of ancient Chinese craftsmanship with their exquisite casting techniques and elegant aesthetic style. This Shi Sou-style bronze incense burner with silver inlay and double ears is a representative masterpiece among them. It not only carries the craftsmanship wisdom of Shi Sou, a master bronze caster of the Ming Dynasty, but also integrates the subtlety of silver inlay craftsmanship with the aesthetic taste of literati, becoming an artistic treasure spanning hundreds of years.

This incense burner is made of refined red copper with a fine and warm texture. After years of precipitation, its surface presents a mellow reddish-brown patina with a restrained and deep luster, fully displaying the vicissitudes of ancient bronze ware. The body of the furnace has a regular shape, with a slightly flared mouth, a bulging belly hanging down, and an outward flared ring foot at the bottom. The lines are smooth and rounded, retaining the dignity of Xuande incense burners while integrating the simplicity and elegance pursued by Ming Dynasty literati. The symmetric beast-head ring-handle ears on both sides are vividly carved. The beast heads have round eyes and curly manes, showing majesty and agility, forming a visual contrast of hardness and softness with the gentle curves of the furnace body, demonstrating the craftsman's precise grasp of shape and verve.
The silver inlay decoration on the furnace body is the most charming part of this vessel and the core embodiment of Shi Sou's craftsmanship. A week of fine meander patterns is decorated under the mouth rim, with regular turns, implying continuity; below it are ruyi cloud patterns, with soft and gentle lines, adding a gentle atmosphere to the vessel. The main decoration on the abdomen is centered on kui-dragon patterns and round longevity patterns, carefully outlined with silver inlay craftsmanship: the kui-dragon patterns face each other in pairs, with winding postures and strong and smooth lines, fully displaying the majestic momentum of ancient bronze patterns; the central round longevity pattern is round and plump, entrusting the good wish of long life and good fortune. These silver wires are as thin as hair, embedded in the copper body and flush with the surface, without falling off after hundreds of years, which not only shows Shi Sou's ultimate control over the craftsmanship of "grooving and embedding silver, then polishing to flatness", but also reflects the peak level of metal craftsmanship in the Ming Dynasty.

In the center of the furnace bottom, the inscription "Shi Sou" is engraved in a combination of seal script and clerical script. The font is simple and elegant, with steady strokes, which is a typical mark of Shi Sou's works. As a famous bronze caster in the late Ming Dynasty, Shi Sou was originally a monk. Although his birth and death years are unknown, he is famous for his exquisite silver inlay craftsmanship on copper. He inherited the casting tradition of Xuande incense burners, and integrated painting and sculpture into bronze making. He first drew drafts on the copper body, then grooved and embedded silver, and finally polished the vessel, making the bronze ware have both practical and aesthetic value. Since Shi Sou had no successors, his works are rare in the world. This silver inlay double-ear incense burner is even more precious, becoming an important physical object for studying the history of craftsmanship and literati life in the Ming Dynasty.

Incense burning is an important part of the life of ancient Chinese literati. This Shi Sou-style bronze incense burner with silver inlay and double ears is not only a practical incense burning utensil, but also an artwork carrying Oriental aesthetics and literati sentiment. When the green smoke curls up from the furnace, the silver inlay patterns flow and shine under the light and shadow, as if allowing people to travel through time and space, feeling the elegant life of Ming Dynasty literati burning incense, tasting tea, playing the piano and discussing Taoism, and also allowing us to still touch the temperature and ingenuity of ancient craftsmen's fingertips after thousands of years.
