The work Stone Leaning Against Crimson Light by contemporary painter Lu Yuanhua is an exquisite example of figure painting that masterfully blends Zen Buddhist aesthetics with splashed-color techniques.

Lu Yuanhua studied under He Haixia, a disciple of Zhang Daqian, and later also learned snow-and-ice landscape painting methods, establishing a distinguished reputation in both splashed-color landscape and figure painting. His Zen-themed figure paintings often depict Bodhidharma and Arhats, fusing the traditional Zen painting mood with modern splashed-color techniques to form a unique artistic style.

The painting portrays the iconic scene of Bodhidharma, the First Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, meditating while facing a wall—a classic subject in traditional Chinese Zen painting.

The inscription Stone Leaning Against Crimson Light ingeniously echoes the famous story of Bodhidharma’s “nine years of wall-gazing”:

“Stone” refers to the stone cave in Songshan where he practiced meditation.

“Crimson Light” symbolizes both the cinnabar-red robe rendered with splashed color in the painting and the light of enlightenment attained through Chan meditation, conveying the meaning of “mind as steady as stone, wisdom radiating like light.”

The wisp of incense smoke rising from the censer on the left is depicted with minimalist negative space and ink lines, creating an ethereal and tranquil Zen atmosphere.

Though Lu Yuanhua is best known for his splashed-color landscapes, this work brilliantly adapts the technique to figure painting, with striking stylistic features:

Color Expression: The robe is rendered with a bold splash of cinnabar red, creating a strong contrast with black ink. The vibrant red and deep black form a visually arresting juxtaposition, where the richness of cinnabar and the transparency of ink create a vivid contrast.

Brushwork and Lines: Bodhidharma’s face is rendered with meticulous detail, capturing his downcast eyes and flowing beard with concise yet powerful strokes that retain the traditional figure painting’s emphasis on structural linework. In contrast, his robes are depicted with expressive splashed ink and color, combining the boldness of Zhang Daqian’s splashed-color style with modern aesthetics.

Composition and Mood: The central figure is balanced by negative space on the left, anchored by the censer and incense smoke. This creates a Zen-inspired “empty yet not empty” composition, highlighting the themes of stillness and enlightenment.
